Tommie Softball sweeps doubleheader with Kansas City in 10 innings

4/26/2025 7:06:00 PM | Softball

A pair of 8-run wins for the Tommies; 30th win of 2025

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (30-16 overall, 11-3 Summit League) continued its domination of Summit League play with a pair of run-rule victories in five innings over the Kansas City Roos (5-36, 1-13) to run its win streak up to a DI program-best 10 games. Ella Cook contributed a grand slam in the 11-3 game one win and Avery Wukawitz smashed a grand slam in the 10-2 game two victory.

Game One Recap
The first inning has been the "Tommie inning" this season. They outscored opponents 59-26 coming into this weekend's games against the Roos and added to that margin with six runs in the bottom half of the first inning in game one.

Ava Kleinfeldt worked a scoreless top half to open the door for the offense. Laken Lienhard led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and then Avery Wukawitz smashed an opposite field home run off the third pitch of her at-bat. Abbi Stierlen singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score Cassidy Carby and Ella Cook to take advantage of a Kansas City error. Kameron Monson and Adrianna Young each added an RBI before the end of the inning.

Kansas City got three runs back in the top of the second. This time, it was the Tommies who fell victim to an error on the defensive side. All three of the runs scored by the Roos went unearned on the ledger of Kleinfeldt.

The Toms went two innings without a run before Ella Cook got an opportunity to bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. She launched a no-doubt home run to straight away center to unload those bases and put St. Thomas on top, 10-3.

Cook came through again in the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk-off double to score Avery Wukawitz and force the eight-run rule.

Ava Kleinfeldt won her 10th game of the season behind five innings of no earned run softball with six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Laken Lienhard, Ella Cook, and Abbi Stierlen each doubled in the game, Wukawitz and Cook also each added home runs. The Tommies combined for 11 hits and moved to 29-16 on the season.

Game Two Recap
They did it again in the first inning of game two but this time in come-from-behind fashion. Christina Crawford gave up a solo home run in the top of the first inning for the Roos' only lead of the doubleheader.

Abbi Stierlen came up in the first with the bases loaded, again, and singled through the middle to score two, again. She brought home Cassidy Carby and Ella Cook, again. Kansas City answered back with a run off an error in the top of the second to tie the game. That would be their last run as Christina Crawford pitched wonderfully through five innings with one earned run on five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

It was all St. Thomas the rest of the way with two runs in the fourth and six runs to force the eight-run rule in the fifth. Avery Wukawitz doubled to score Ruby Moore and Adrianna Young in the fourth after Young tripled to right center field with one out.

Moore got the scoring started in the fifth with an RBI double to bring Kameron Monson home. Avery Wukawitz followed with a grand slam to break the game open, her team-leading eighth of the season.

Stierlen delivered again with a walk-off single up the middle to score Ella Cook from second and secure the conference series win.

Wukawitz, Cook, and Moore each added doubles, Adrianna Young secured the first triple of her career, and Wukawitz's home run was the only big fly of game two for the Purple, she wrapped up the game with six RBI.
