Men’s Hockey gets the jump on Ferris State with 7-3 win

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (17-13-5 overall) took game one of the Mason Cup Quarterfinal series against the Ferris State Bulldogs (13-19-3) on Friday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena by a 7-3 score.

The Toms peppered the Bulldogs for seven goals after falling 1-0 to begin the game. Liam Malmquist scored two, as did Cooper Gay. Jake Braccini and Quinton Pepper each scored in the first and Lucas Wahlin scored shorthanded in the second. Jake Sibell won his 10th consecutive game in net with 28 saves on 31 shots.

Recap
The last time these two squads played on a Friday in Mendota Heights there were nine first period goals and 15 total. Spring the calendar ahead to today with ten goals, eight different goal scorers, a power play goal, a shorthanded goal, six players with multi-point nights, and Friday night's Mason Cup Quarterfinal had it all.

Ferris State got on the board first just 91 seconds into play on a slick backhanded shot from Jack Silich to beat Jake Sibell on the rush. The Tommies answered with the next two goals just 12 seconds apart at 5:47 and 5:59. Liam Malmquist went roof on the Bulldogs' netminder after catching a pass from Ethan Gauer out of the air with his glove. Chase Foley started the scoring play with a quick breakout pass to Gauer. Next, just moments after the faceoff, Cooper Gay fed Ryan O'Neill who ripped a shot off the goaltender's pad onto the stick of Jake Braccini who scored on the rebound.

The Bulldogs tallied the next at 9:53 to tie the game at two. Liam Malmquist struck again, this time on a rebounded shot from Matthew Gleason to take the lead at 14:27. Those pesky 'Dogs took advantage of a power play chance at 18:16 to tie it up once again.

The game did not stay tied for long after Quinton Pepper scored his first goal of the season on a beautiful wrap-around at 19:11 from Caige Sterzer and Casy Laylin. St. Thomas went into the break after a chaotic first period with the lead and settled things down from there.

Lucas Wahlin's unassisted shorthanded goal was the only of the second period for either side. It was the Tommies' seventh shorthanded goal of the season, third-most in the country. Cooper Gay added a pair of goals to seal the game in the third at 10:12 and 14:05 from Jake Braccini and Ethan Elias and then from Ryan O'Neill, respectively.

Jake Sibell made saves on each of the Bulldogs' final 22 shots.

St. Thomas outshot Ferris State 37-31 but lost the faceoff battle 45-32. Jake Sibell won his 10th consecutive game in goal for the Tommies who improved to a program-best 17-13-5 overall record.

Up Next
The Tommies look to finish out their series against the Bulldogs tomorrow night with a 6:07 p.m. puck drop at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. It would be their first playoff series win in program history.
