ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas' men's hockey head coach Rico Blasi was named a finalist for Central Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year on Monday (Mar. 24).
Blasi guided the team to a program-best 19-14-5 record after a 15-4-1 stretch in the final 20 games of the season. Blasi's Tommies finished third in the regular season with a 13-9-4 conference record and made it to the first Mason Cup Final in program history.
Other finalists included Luke Strand of Minnesota State and Bob Daniels of Ferris State.
The winner will be announced on Wednesday, March 26 at 10 a.m. CST.
Blasi has won the CCHA Coach of the Year award five times while coaching at Miami University, this is his first time being nominated as a finalist while leading the Tommies.
Under Blasi's leadership the Tommies have improved their win total year over year since transitioning to Division I hockey. This season was the best among the three with team program records set in nearly every statistical category.
He coached up multiple 40-point scorers (Liam Malmquist 45 and Lucas Wahlin 41) for the first time in program history. Jake Sibell also won a program-record 12 games in goal this season.
