Tommie Softball earns series win over Omaha; Trotter homers twice

The Tommies won the season series over the Mavericks for the first time in program history

OMAHA, Neb. – St. Thomas Softball (16-10 overall, 2-1 Summit League), led by freshmen Zoe Trotter and Ava Kleinfeldt, took down the reigning league tournament champion Omaha Mavericks (20-7, 1-2) to win the season series for the first time in history on Sunday afternoon.

Zoe Trotter smashed the first home run (and hit) of her career in the second inning, and then smacked her second home run in the seventh inning. Ava Kleinfeldt recorded the second complete game shutout of her career. This is first time that the Omaha Mavericks have been shutout in back-to-back games since April of 2021.

Recap
The Tommies and Kleinfeldt matched up with the Maverick's ace, Maddia Graf on Sunday afternoon. Both pitchers tossed scoreless first innings, but the Tommies capitalized in the top of the second.

Ella Cook led off the second with a single and advanced to third on a Kaitlyn Raymond sacrifice bunt. Abbi Stierlen singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Kameron Monson slapped a grounder back to the pitcher and Cook got caught in a rundown. She was ruled out by the home plate umpire on the field, but head coach Jen Trotter challenged the call and it was overturned.

After the Tommies scored their first run of the game, Zoe Trotter stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third. She jumped on the first pitch and lined a long home run over the left center field fence, the first hit of her career. St. Thomas went up 4-0 and never looked back.

Kleinfeldt faced the minimum through three innings after an inning-ending double play from Laken Lienhard and Abbi Stierlen in the third. The freshman gave up a double in the fourth and fifth innings but stayed calm and kept the Mavericks off the board.

Trotter stepped up to the plate with a runner on first and two outs in the top of the seventh and in almost carbon-copy fashion, lined her second home run of the game over the left center field barrier.

Kleinfeldt induced back-to-back groundouts with one runner on to finish off the Omaha Mavericks.
