Baseball secures series win over South Dakota State

Tommies split Saturday doubleheader at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. –   St. Thomas baseball completed its series against South Dakota State with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  After winning game one, St. Thomas (11-8 overall, 5-1 Summit) fell to South Dakota State (3-16 overall, 2-4 Summit League) in the series finale at Erv Huether Field.
 
GAME ONE (W, 11-4)
South Dakota State took the early lead in game one of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the opening frame. However, St. Thomas quickly responded with two runs of its own to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the second inning.
 
The Tommies added four runs in the fifth inning, taking their first lead of the afternoon. Extending the lead, St. Thomas posted five runs between the sixth and seventh frame, keeping the Jackrabbits off the score sheet.
 
Eight Tommies in the starting lineup recorded a hit against South Dakota State, led by Tanner Recchio, Joe Roder, Max Nyrop and Adam Puder, who each posted two.  
 
Walker Retz (2-0) posted four scoreless frames, totaling six strikeouts over 6.2 innings on Saturday.
 
Kody Dalen tallied six strikeouts, shutting out the Jackrabbits over 2.1 innings in game one of the day.
 
GAME TWO (L, 8-2)
Once again, South Dakota State gained the early lead in the series finale, holding the 2-0 advantage after the opening inning.
 
Adding six runs over two innings, the Jackrabbits extended their lead to 8-0 through four.
 
St. Thomas posted its first runs of the game as Adam Puder and Tanner Recchio scored in the fifth inning.
 
Both squads were kept scoreless the remainder of the game, as South Dakota State picked up the 8-2 win in the series finale.
 
Puder and Recchio posted their second multi-hit game of the day.
 
Riane Ritter (1-1), Zak Endres and Max Skilbeck combined for 10 strikeouts on Saturday.
