Softball sweeps Gopher Indoor Classic with win over Minnesota

3/2/2025 5:51:00 PM | Softball

A no-hitter over Wagner and an extra-inning thriller over Minnesota to complete 5-0 weekend

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Thomas Tommies left no crumbs on the table at the Gopher Indoor Classic with a sweep of the competition and two wins on Sunday. Keira Murphy recorded the program's first no-hitter in a 14-0 win over the Wagner Seahawks and the Tommies defeated the Minnesota Gophers in eight innings, 8-6.

The Tommies have won 11 of their first 18 games this season and are currently on a program-best six-game winning streak after a 5-0 weekend at US Bank Stadium.

Game One Recap
Keira Murphy let the defense play for her during her five innings of work. She did not allow a single hit but struck out only one batter. The Tommies did not commit an error and helped Murphy out of multiple jams due to the eight walks allowed by the junior.

Murphy's no hitter was the first in program history and headlined a dominant team effort put on display by St. Thomas over the Wagner Seahawks.

The offense combined for 14 runs on 11 hits and scored in every inning.

Avery Wukawitz led off the game with a solo home run on the third pitch. It was her third time beginning a ballgame with a home run this season. Her smash opened a five run first inning after Abbi Stierlen walked home Kaitlyn Raymond, Weingart earned an RBI the hard way with a hit by pitch, and then Ruby Moore scored two on a single to right field.

Cassidy Carby led off the second inning with a double and did not stand there for very long after Kaitlyn Raymond tripled her home. Laken Lienhard singled to left and scored Raymond.

Kyllie Weingart was the catalyst in the third with a lead off walk followed by a Ruby Moore single. Carby doubled again to score Moore. Raymond singled to score Carby and then Ella Cook homered to left field to complete the four run third.

Offensive production cooled in the fourth with just one run scored on an Addison Coffey walk.

Anna Caruso completed the dominant performance with a pinch hit two run double, the first hit of her collegiate career.

Game Two Recap
Sunday's finale was the definition of "instant classic" and the Tommies came out on top 8-6 in eight innings. Ava Kleinfeldt (4-0) earned the win in the circle after 4.2 innings of inspired one-run softball. Adrianna Young's heads-up base running to advance home on a passed ball in the top of the eighth turned out to be the game-winning play.

It all began in the top of the first inning with a three-run frame from the Tommies. Four consecutive singles from Avery Wukawitz, Cassidy Carby, Kaitlyn Raymond, and Ella Cook put the Toms up, 1-0. After Minnesota recorded two outs, Abbi Stierlen came through with a two-run single to center that tripled the Toms' lead.

The Gophers had no answer in the bottom of the inning and went down quietly with one strikeout to St. Thomas' starting pitcher, Christina Crawford

Minnesota made a pitching change after that three-run first and the move worked out. They scored the games next five runs with two in the second and three in the fourth while holding the Toms scoreless through their next three innings.

After being offensively frustrated in the second, third, and fourth, the Tommies took advantage of a one out Gopher error. Ella Cook doubled the beneficiary of the previous error, Kaitlyn Raymond, to third base and was then pinch ran for by Miley Wichman. Laken Lienhard slapped a soft grounder to the Gopher shortstop who knew she would have to rush the throw. Her effort resulted in an overthrow of the first baseman and, after the ball went out of play, two bases for Raymond, Wichman, and Lienhard to tie the game at five.

Abbi Stierlen stepped up with two outs in the frame and came through once again with an RBI single to score Zoe Trotter and give St. Thomas the lead.

Ava Kleinfeldt entered the game in the fourth inning. The freshman worked until the bottom of the seventh with two outs without allowing a run. Minnesota, down to its final out, belted a solo home run off Kleinfeldt to tie the game and push it to extra innings.

Adrianna Young started the eighth on second base and advanced on a rocketed ground out back to the pitcher by Stierlen. Jenn Kuhn pinch hit for Kameron Monson and singled to the shortstop to put runners on the corners. Kyllie Weingart pinch ran for Kuhn with Ruby Moore up at the plate.

Coach Trotter pulled the puppet strings near perfectly all game long and put on the safety squeeze sign for Moore. The Tommie second baseman got a strike but missed the bunt. With Weingart stealing second the Gopher catcher bobbled the pitch and Young read the play perfectly. She broke for home and slid under the tag to take the lead.

Avery Wukawitz doubled Weingart home but was gunned down at third for the final out while trying to stretch her double into a triple.

The freshman, Kleinfeldt, got the ball for the Toms in the bottom of the eighth. She worked a 1-2-3 inning and the final out landed in the glove of Adrianna Young in right field.
