Tommie Softball won its 7th and 8th in a row with wins over Drake
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Thomas Softball (13-7 overall) continued its red-hot March with back-to-back wins over the Drake Bulldogs (5-12) on Saturday afternoon at the Urban Youth Academy. Ella Cook went the distance in game one and Ava Kleinfeldt tallied a complete game in game two.
Game One Recap
The Tommies won a bit differently than they had before on this current win streak, in a low scoring affair. Ella Cook got the start and worked a scoreless first inning. Her team backed her up with a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from Kameron Monson to score Laken Lienhard.
Cook allowed one run in each of the next two innings on an RBI single in the second and an RBI single in the third. The junior was given new life after Adrianna Young tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.
Ella Cook went to work with a clean slate, and she left it prettier than she found it. The junior worked seven innings of two-run ball with six hits and three walks allowed with seven strikeouts. Cook's work opened the door for the Tommies offense and Laken Lienhard burst through that opened door headfirst with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to score Miley Wichman and put the Toms on top, 4-2.
Cook worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning and induced a game-ending groundout to finish out the complete game.
Defensively, St. Thomas played perfectly with no errors in route to its program-best seventh win in a row. Lienhard and Abbi Stierlen were the only two Tommies with a multi-hit game, both of Laken's were of the extra-base variety (double and home run). Cook singled and walked in her three plate appearances.
Game Two Recap
Ava Kleinfeldt remained undefeated on Saturday afternoon with seven innings of one-run ball in her fifth consecutive win. The freshman did not allow a run until the top of the sixth inning and pitched a majority of the game with a slim lead.
St. Thomas' offense cooled off a bit with just four hits and four walks but came through when it mattered. Grace Nosan led off the third inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ruby Moore. Cassidy Carby scored Nosan from second on her fifth home run of the season to center field.
Carby's home run was the only extra base hit of the game from the St. Thomas bats. Kaitlyn Raymond, Ella Cook, and Abbi Stierlen each singled in the win. Kleinfeldt tight roped around seven hits and three walks and allowed just the one run. She struck out two Drake batters.
