BROOKINGS, S.D. – The regular season has officially come to an end for the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team. The Tommies faced #25 South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota in the season finale, looking to hand the Jackrabbits their first conference loss in three seasons. The Cinderella story was simply not meant to be. Despite a hard fought first half, SDSU ran away in the second half, dealing St. Thomas a 79-46 loss. The Tommies close the regular season with a Division I era record 17 wins thanks to their 17-12 overall record and 9-7 mark in Summit League play.
RECAP:
Admittedly, things did not look good for St. Thomas early in Saturday's game, as the #25 team in the nation raced out to a 9-0 lead. To make matters worse, senior forward Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) was tacked with two early fouls, sending the Tommies leading scorer to the bench not even three minutes into the game. However, St. Thomas was undeterred and started slowly but surely chipping away at the SDSU lead. It started with the Tommie back court, as Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) and Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) scored St. Thomas' first five points before Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) made it 13-7 Jackrabbits before the media timeout.
A sluggish second quarter by SDSU allowed St. Thomas to tie the game at 21-21. How sluggish you ask? Well, the Jackrabbits were 0-10 from the floor five minutes into the second quarter, including an 0-4 clip from three point range, and scored just two points before the media timeout from the free throw line. That drought eventually ended, as Paige Meyer extended the SDSU lead to 25-21 with 3:51 remaining in the half. However, the Tommies continued to hang around, with a three from Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) pulling them back within three at 28-26. However, the Jackrabbits closed the second quarter on a 6-0 run to hold a 34-26 halftime lead.
Unfortunately, that run carried over to the second half, as SDSU outscored St. Thomas 25-12 in the third quarter and 20-8 in the fourth to secure the 79-46 victory. The Tommies struggled to generate offense in the second half, as Langbehn was limited to just nine minutes of play. Sand proved to be a spark for St. Thomas off the bench, scoring 10 points and nabbing four rebounds in the process. Hill and Scalia also scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough to spur the Tommies to victory in their regular season finale.
