Tommies compete in final tune up before Summit League Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. –
The regular season is officially concluded for the University of St. Thomas swim and dive team. The Tommies swam in their final competition before the Summit League Championships, competing at the First Chance Meet, hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center. St. Thomas impressed in its final meet before conference, as several individuals recorded top-10 times and performances in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS:  DAY ONE
The Tommies kicked things off with a bang Friday evening, finding plenty of success in the pool. Mathilde Thorsen (Herlev, Denmark / Gladsaxe Svømmeklub) made waves in the 100 butterfly, nearly breaking a 10 year old program record for St. Thomas in one of the first events of the weekend. The first year won the 100 butterfly Friday with a time of 55.77, becoming just the second player in program history to win under 56.0 seconds. Thorsen's performance currently ranks second all time behind Mariann Kukielka's program record time of 55.25. Thorsen also clocked a top-10 time in the 50 free, tying Maddie Francois' (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell) time of 23.70 to finish fifth.
 
Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) and Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) also clocked top-10 times in the 50 free, with Forsberg's counting as a season and career best. The senior finished seventh in the race thanks to her PR time of 23.87, while Undem finished sixth with a time of 23.82, a handful of milliseconds off her PR time of 23.73. Francois and Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) also earned top-10 finishes in the race, though they did not crack the program top-10 in the process.
 
St. Thomas also saw a top-5 time in the 100 breaststroke, as Ashley Plantenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) put together yet another strong performance in the event. The senior swam a season best of time of 1:05.24, which is the sixth fastest time in the event. She also finished fourth in the race, while teammates Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) and Annika Olson (Shakopee, Minn. / Shakopee) finished fifth and sixth. Jones' time of 1:05.86 clocked in as the seventh fastest in program history, while Olson's time of 1:06.54 just missed the program's top-10 list.
 
Lindsay Johnson (Duluth, Minn. / Denfield) and Madeline Elseth (Grand Forks, N.D. / Central) represented St. Thomas in the 500 freestyle, finishing in eighth and 13th place. Katherine Spanier (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Grace Schroer (Gold River, Calif. / Casa Roble) earned top-10 finishes in the 200 IM with times of 2:14.14 and 2:14.82 respectively.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS:  DAY TWO (MORNING SESSION)
St. Thomas success carried over to the second day of competition, as the Tommies once again impressed in the morning session. St. Thomas claimed five of the top-10 spots in the 200 free, including Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville). The sophomore continued to dominate the freestyle races, finishing in third with a time of 1:53.13. Thorsen, Gwen Moore (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) and Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) finished 4-5-6, while Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) finished eighth in the race.
 
The Tommies success continued in the 100 backstroke, with Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge) headlining. Davis set the DI era record in the race, clocking a time of 55.65 to finish in fifth place. Overall, it counts as the second fastest time in program history behind Emma Paulson's 54.43.
 
In addition to Davis, Sophie Curran (Minneapolis, Minn. / Edina), Jin-Jae Robinson (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy Berlin), and Grace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic) earned top-10 finishes, while Kathryn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation), Willow Larsen (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield) and Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) earned top-15 finishes as well.
 
Schroer and Spanier once again represented St. Thomas in the 400 IM, which Schorer claiming second place in the race. The senior's season best time of 4:45.03 made her the second fastest swimmer in the pool in the event, while Spanier finished fourth with a time of 4:47.01.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS:  DAY TWO (EVENING SESSION)
The Tommies concluded their weekend with Saturday's evening session, with more swimmers putting together season best or PR times. Maggie Kolb (Afton, Minn. / Hill Murray) and Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) finished 1-2 in the 200 butterfly, while Kolb winning the race with a season best time of 2:15.44. Linden finished second with a time of 2:17.46, helping St. Thomas earn the top-2 places in the race.
 
The Tommies saw four swimmers earn top-10 finishes in the 200 backstroke, including Spanier, who finished sixth with a time of 2:09.40. Makenna Monday (Grafton, Wis. / Cedarburg), Schroer and Sydney Holinka (Maple Grove, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's) finished 7-8-9 thanks to season best times by all of them.
 
Both St. Thomas relay teams finished in the top-5 for the 400 freestyle relay. The "B" team of Johnson, Schroer, Linden and Monday claimed third place in the event with a time of 3:44.43, while the "A" team of Mariah Reynolds (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead), Victoria Leticia Matos Santiago (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Academia Maria Reina) , Spanier and Kolb finished fifth with a time of 3:47.68.
 
MEN'S RESULTS: DAY ONE
The Tommie men were equally as successful in the pool over the weekend, as they too carded impressive times on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Ill. / Fenwick) was mere milliseconds away from breaking a school record. The freshman was the highest finisher for St. Thomas in the 50 freestyle, breaking up a University of Minnesota sweep thanks to his time of 20.47. Not only was it the third fastest time in the pool but the second fastest time in program history. Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst), Willy Coborn (St. Paul, Minn. / North St. Paul), Nick Welle (Alexandria, Minn. / Alexandria) and Cole Johnson (Fitchburg, Wis. / Madison West) also earned top-10 finishes for the Tommies in the race.
 
Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) made headlines in the 100 breaststroke, earning a top-5 finish and clocking a top-10 time in program history. Richard's time of 56.09 was fast enough for fourth place and is also the fourth fastest time in program history. Entering the weekend, Richard ranked seventh all-time with a career best time of 56.61. Teammate Sean Bannon (Rochester, Minn.) finished seventh in the same race with a time of 56.85, while Ian Leonard (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) and Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) finished eighth and ninth respectively.
 
Matt Glenna (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park) kicked things off with an eighth place finish in the 100 fly, clocking a season best time of 51.64 in the race. Teammate Thomson Yatso (Milwaukee, Wis. / Shorewood) finished just behind Glenna in ninth thanks to his time of 52.56.
 
Jacob Duran (Sante Fe, N.M. / St. Michael's) was the teams top finisher in the 500 freestyle, earning a seventh place finish with a season best time of 4:56.30.
 
MEN'S RESULTS: DAY TWO (MORNING SESSION)
Like the women, the Tommies continued to perform well in Saturday's morning session. Though only a handful of swimmers competed, nearly all put together season best swims, including Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West). The senior clocked a time of 1:41.59 in the 200 freestyle, which was good enough for fourth place in the race. It was also a career best time for the senior, who now ranks seventh all-time in program history.
 
Charlie Folks (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) and Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) finished fifth and sixth in the same race, clocking time of 1:42.47 and 1:43.46 respectively. Tucker Holmes (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) finished eighth with a time of 1:44.96.
 
Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) nearly put together a record breaking performance in the 100 back. Currently the program record holder, Jensen clocked a time of 48.63 in the race Saturday morning, which put him squarely in third place. Teammate John Wion (Ashley, Ohio / Big Walnut) finished fifth thanks to a time of 50.54, while Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen) and Miguel San Jose (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) finished in sixth and eighth.
 
UP NEXT
Up next is the Summit League Championship for St. Thomas, as the team heads to Iowa City, Iowa for the conference meet. The four day invite will open on Wednesday, February 19 and conclude Saturday, February 22. Morning sessions throughout the conference championship will begin at 10:00 a.m. and evening sessions will start at 6:00 p.m.
