IOWA CITY, IOWA – It's been a thrilling two days for the University of St. Thomas swim and dive team at the Summit League Championships. Both the men and women saw a handful of program records fall in Iowa City, Iowa, and several swimmers qualified for finals in their respective individual events. Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) became the first St. Thomas swimmer to earn All-Conference honors at the 2024-25 Summit League Championships thanks to her third place finish in the 50 freestyle.

WOMEN'S RESULTS: DAY ONE
Diving and relays took center stage on the first day of competition at the Summit League Championships, and the Tommies found plenty of success in all disciplines. In fact, St. Thomas broke a long standing program record in the 800 freestyle relay, dismantling the old time by six full seconds. The team of Mathilde Thorsen (Herlev, Denmark / Gladsaxe Svømmeklub), Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville), Gwen Moore (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) and Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) finished fifth overall thanks to their school record breaking time of 7:31.02. The time was 10 seconds faster than their seeded time of 7:41.90 and broke the previous program record of 7:36.01 set in 2019.

The Tommies 200 medley relay also earned a fifth place finish thanks to their season best time of 1:43.71. The team of Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge), Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler), Thorsen and Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) couldn't quite break the record set at the 2024 Summit League Championships but did secure a top-5 finish in the event for St. Thomas.

Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) was the top diver for the Tommies in the 1-meter competition, earning a tenth place finish with a six-dive score of 234.75 in finals.

MEN'S RESULTS: DAY ONE
The St. Thomas men were equally as successful in the pool, tying one program record and earning top-5 finishes in both relays. The Tommies 200 medley relay team of Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings), Sean Bannon (Rochester, Minn.), Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) and Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Ill. / Fenwick) finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:28.99, tying the program record set in 2024.

The 800 free relay team also put together a strong performance. The team of Matt Glenna (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park), Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls), Charlie Folks (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) and Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) swam a season best time of 6:42.54 in the race to close the day with a fifth place finish.

WOMEN'S RESULTS:  DAY TWO
It was quite the morning for the Tommies, who saw more program records fall on the second day of competition. Additionally, a grand total of four student-athletes qualified for either "A" or "B" finals in their respective events, including distance freestyle specialists Hayes. Less than 24 hours after helping the 800 freestyle relay team break the program record, Hayes nabbed a spot in the 500 free final with a record breaking time of her own. The sophomore's time of 4:58.07 secured the final spot in the "A" finals and also broke Katelyn Strauss' program record of 4:59.01. Hayes entered the Summit League tournament ranked #2 all-time in the race and is just the second swimmer in program history to break the five minute mark. She would finish eighth in finals with a time of 5:00.01.

Hayes wasn't the only swimmer to qualify for finals in her respective race, as both Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) and Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) grabbed spots in the "A" final for the 50 free. Forsberg also qualified for "B" finals of the same race thanks to her time of 23.88. It was Undem that would provide the highlight of the evening session for St. Thomas. The first year swam an identical 23.17 in finals to finish third in the race and earn All-Conference honors. Fischer finished eighth with a time of 23.90, while Forsberg claimed sixteenth with a time of 24.04 in finals.

The Tommies continued to break records in the final event of the night, the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Thorsen, Undem, Fischer and Forsberg broke the program record set earlier this season by .3, clocking a time of 1:33.16 in the final. That time was not only the fastest in program history but was also good enough for a fourth place finish in the event.

MEN'S RESULTS: DAY TWO
Like the women, the men found plenty of success on day two, both in the pool and on the diving board. Five swimmers qualified for finals in their respective events, helping St. Thomas score points in both the 50 and 500 freestyle. In fact, three Tommies qualified for "B" finals in the 50 free, including Cole Johnson (Fitchburg, Wis. / Madison West), Fask and Nick Welle (Alexandria, Minn. / Alexandira). Fask carded the second fastest time in program history in prelims, just missing out on a top-8 time at 20.62. Welle and Johnson also earned a place in the "B" final with PR times of 20.66 and 20.68 respectively. The trio would finish 14-15-16 in finals.

Foti and Folks continued to excel in the distance freestyle events, earning a place in the "B" final for the 500 free. Foti was just a handful of seconds away from qualifying for "A" finals, swimming the ninth fastest time in prelims at 4:33.04. The PR time was the third fastest in program history. Foti would finish 15th after swimming the race in 4:35.88 in finals.

Folks joined Foti in the "B" final for the race, clocking a time of 4:34.03 in prelims. He then clocked two seconds of his time in the final, swimming the 500 free in 4:32.90 to finish in 11th place. The time was not just a PR for Folks by the second fastest in program history as well, knocking Foti's prelim time to fourth.

The Tommies highlight came in the final race of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay. Like the women, the team of Jensen, Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen), Johnson and Welle broke the program record in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 1:21.27.

Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) led the St. Thomas divers, finishing 11th place with a score of 241.55. Julius Krumenacher (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha North) finished 13th with a score of 236.50, while Ben Linde (Andover, Minn. / Andover) finished 14th with a score of 228.90. All three divers improved their scores from prelims.

UP NEXT
Thanks to these and several other performances, both the Tommie men's and women's teams sit in the top-5 of the team standings. The St. Thomas women sit in fourth with a two-day score of 162, while men are in fifth with a score of 145. The Tommies will open day three of competition at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
