Tommies finish fifth at Summit League Championships

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive teams competed in the final day of the Summit League Championships. The Tommies saw more podium finishes on Saturday, including a bronze medal finish by sophomore Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes). Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Central) and Charlie Folks (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) both set program records in the 1650 freestyle.  
 
Both teams concluded the championship in fifth place.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS: SATURDAY
The women concluded the Summit League Championships in fifth place, scoring 410.5 points over the course of four days.
  • Undem earned All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season, this time in the 100 freestyle. The sophomore earned her spot in the 100 freestyle "A" final thanks to her time of 50.92. In the finals, she not only improved her time, but swam the second fastest in program history, securing bronze medal honors with a time of 50.58.
  • Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Central) finished 13th in the same race after swimming 52.39 in finals, while Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler) finished in 15th.
  • Hayes kicked off the evening session with a historic performance, beating her own program record in the 1650 freestyle by nearly four full seconds. The junior finished fifth in the race thanks to a PR and school record time of 17:10.06. Clare Liebl (Dennison, Minn. / Northfield) just missed the podium, claiming ninth, and Tessa Lindstrom (Rosemount, Minn. / Visitation) finished tenth.
  • Katie Prunty (Wexford, Ireland / Colaiste Bride Enniscorthy) also scored for St. Thomas in the 1650 free thanks to her 13th place finish.
  • Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis.) continued her impressive performance at the Summit League Championships, qualifying for the "B" final in the 200 backstroke. She finished in 12th place with a time of 2:04.31. Willow Larsen (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield) also swam in the "B" final, finishing 16th with a time of 2:07.18.
  • Emily Wooden (Chino Hills, Calif. / Ayala) concluded her Summit League Championship with a top-8 finish in the 200 butterfly. The senior finished in sixth thanks to a swim of 2:06.28.
  • Teammates Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) and Izzy Shering (Sheffield, England) both qualified for the "B" final in the 200 fly, finishing in tenth and 13th respectively.
  • Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) and Brooke Gothard (Golden, Colo. / Wheat Ridge) finished back-to-back in the 200 breaststroke. Both qualified for "B" finals and finished 12th and 13th respectively. Izabelle Schwartz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) finished in 15th.
  • On the boards, Maya Kelly (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Stillwater) qualified for "A" finals in the 3-meter competition. The first year finished eighth in the competition with a score of 238.70.
  • Zoey Johnson (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) also qualified for finals in the 3-meter competition, earning her spot in the "B" finals. She finished 14th with a score of 204.00.
  • In the final relay of the tournament, the 400 freestyle relay, the Tommies top team of Undem, Hess, Gothard and Selden finished fifth with a time of 3:27.47.

MEN'S RESULTS: SATURDAY
St. Thomas concluded the final day of the Summit League Championships in fifth place, scoring 349.5 points over the course of four days. Folks opened the night for the men with the fastest swim in program history in the 1650 freestyle.
  • Folks earned a top-8 finish in the longest race of the conference championships thanks to his PR and program record breaking time. Folks finished eighth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:53.50.
  • Tucker Holmes (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) finished tenth in the 1650 with a time of 6:15.49.
  • Holmes and Lucas Becker (Chanhassen, Minn. / Chanhassen) finished 7-8 in the 200 back with times of 1:50.39 and 1:51.26 respectively.
  • Like their teammates, John Trosper (Clive, Iowa / Waukee) and Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) finished back-to-back in the 200 butterfly. Trosper finished fifth thanks to his season best time of 1:49.13, while Seiler finished sixth with a time of 1:50.75.
  • Miguel San Jose (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) finished 16th with a time of 1:55.11.
  • Sean Bannon (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) qualified for the "B" final of the 200 breaststroke. Bannon finished in tenth thanks to a swim of 2:03.81, while Richard finished 12th with a time of 2:04.65.
  • Joseph Sandhoefner (Minnetonka, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret) also swam in the 200 breaststroke "B" final, finishing in 16th.
  • The team of Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings), Trosper, Becker and Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:01.82. That time broke the program record the group set earlier in the season by .03.
