Freshman threw second straight complete game during 3-0 win
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Ava Kleinfeldt threw her first career complete game shutout Sunday to help St. Thomas softball to a 3-0 win over Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. The freshman finished with seven strikeouts and two hits allowed as the Tommies (6-7) finished their weekend with the lone win at the Roadrunner Classic.
Recap
Kleinfelt, who recorded her second straight complete game win, totaled four of her seven strikeouts through the first three innings. She allowed just one baserunner through that span, coming on one of her two walks through seven innings.
The Tommie bats led off the first and second innings with singles before capitalizing on a leadoff walk in the fourth. Avery Wukawitz, who led off the game with a single, walked to start the third inning and set up a two-run home run by Cassidy Carby, her third home run of the season.
Kleinfelt left baserunners stranded in both the fourth and fifth innings including two on first and third following two strikeouts to end the fifth. She sent the UIW side down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to move her pitching record to 2-0.
The two-run lead following the third inning was all Kleinfelt needed for the win, but St. Thomas added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded sac fly by Kyllie Weingart. Her fifth RBI of the season drove in Zoe Trotter, who pinch ran for Ella Cook following a lead-off walk.
Up Next
The Tommies remain in the Twin Cities for its next weekend of games Feb. 28 – March 2 at the Gopher Indoor Classic. St. Thomas will play both Miami (OH) and Wagner twice before closing the tournament against the host Minnesota, all at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
