Baseball secures 11-10 victory over New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, NM – St. Thomas baseball continued its series against New Mexico State on Saturday evening. In the back-and-forth ballgame, the Tommies earned their first win of the season with an 11-10 victory over the Aggies.

Each team scored a run in the opening frame, as New Mexico State took a 3-1 lead after three innings at Presley Askew Field. It didn't take long for St. Thomas to regain the lead as Zan Von Schlegell recorded a grand slam, putting the Tommies up 5-3 midway through four innings.

After seven innings, the two teams were tied once again at 10-10. The Aggies and Tommies had both added five runs over three innings, led by Joe Roder who posted a 3-RBI double to left field in the top of the sixth.

After neither team scored in the eighth frame, Maulik recorded an RBI-single, putting the Tommies up by a run. Keeping New Mexico State off the board in the bottom of the final frame, St. Thomas secured its first win of the season against the Aggies.

Seven Tommies recorded multi-hit games, as Max Moris went 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Bryce Leedle, Tucker Huhn, Riane Ritter and Max Skilbeck (1-0) combined for 12 strikeouts. Ritter made his collegiate debut on the mound tallying three strikeouts.

Securing the win, Skilbeck did not allow a hit or a run to score over 2.1 innings, totaling four strikeouts in his season debut.
