Kameron Monson, Cassidy Carby, and Avery Wukawitz all smacked round-trippers
SAN MARCOS, Tex. – St. Thomas Softball (4-3 overall) could not put the pieces together against the hosting Texas State Bobcats (5-2) or the New Mexico Lobos (4-3-1) on Friday at the Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Game One Recap
Ava Kleinfeldt got the starting nod and allowed no hits through three innings to open the door for St. Thomas against the hosting Bobcats. Her phenomenal start gave Kameron Monson a chance to take the lead for the Tommies. The junior catcher belted a two-run home run to score Laken Lienhard and put the Tommies on top, 2-0. The Bobcats answered for one run in the bottom of the fourth.
After a lead off single and an error committed by Kleinfeldt, Ella Cook entered the game with runners on second and third with no outs. She allowed an RBI single before the Bobcats tied the game on a second error in the inning. A third single in the frame from Texas State put them in front, 3-2.
Kleinfeldt tossed four+ innings and allowed three runs, two earned, one walk, four hits, and three strikeouts. Cook got hit with the loss after going two innings with one run allowed on two hits with one strikeout.
The Tommies made it a game late on a two-out solo home run to center field by Cassidy Carby in the seventh inning.
Kaitlyn Raymond was the only Tommie with a multi-hit game, she went 2-4 with a pair of singles. The Monson and Carby home runs were the only two extra-base hits of the game for the Purple.
Game Two Recap
Avery Wukawitz got game two started with a bang, her second home run to lead off a game this season. Christina Crawford went to work with a one run lead but failed to hold it in the bottom of the first. She walked the first two batters she faced before allowing a single to load the bases. The senior worked out of the bases loaded jam while allowing just one run.
Unfortunately for the Tommies, New Mexico manufactured a three-run two-out rally in the bottom of the second after a scoreless top half of the frame. Crawford allowed a walk and then hit a batter before Ella Cook came in to pitch. Cook walked the bases loaded and then allowed back-to-back singles before recording the final out. The Lobos led 4-1 and never gave the lead back.
Laken Lienhard worked a bases loaded walk to get one run back in the top of the third and then Cassidy Carby got the Toms to within one run in the top of the fourth with an infield single to score Zoe Trotter.
The Lobos added two runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to win the game, 8-3.
Ella Cook received the loss after her two innings of work with three runs allowed on seven hits and two walks, she struck out one. Keira Murphy finished the game with 2.1 innings of work, she allowed two runs on two hits with three strike outs.
Cassidy Carby was a shining light in the otherwise frustrating loss. She went 3-3 with three singles and a walk. Avery Wukawitz scored twice after reaching base safely two times. Laken Lienhard had the only other extra-base hit, a double.
