Tommies erupt for 81 points in third straight win

MISSOULA, MONT. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team is on a roll. The Tommies won their third straight game Saturday afternoon, using a dominant second half to power past the Montana Grizzlies 81-65. St. Thomas shot .524 from the field, which helped the Tommies improve to 4-6 this season and finish the Big Sky-Summit Challenge with a 2-0 record. 

QUICK HITS:

  • St . Thomas was led by Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany), who recorded her second 20+ performance of the season. The sophomore closed the game with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four blocks, putting together one of her most well-rounded performances of 2025-26.  
  • Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong) recorded yet another double-double for the Tommies, scoring 15 points and pulling in a team-leading 11 rebounds.
  • In fact, all five St. Thomas starters scored in double digits for the first time this season. Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) scored 13 points and added nine rebounds and seven assists for the Tommies, while Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) and Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) each added 12.

SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter:
St. Thomas came out swinging, shooting .533 in the opening frame. Sand set the tone early with eight points, while Hauge knocked down a pair of threes to five the Tommies an early 13-9 lead. While St. Thomas built its lead to six on a 7-0 run, Montana closed on a 5–0 stretch to tie the game at 20–20.

Second Quarter: Offensive for both teams stalled in the second quarter, as the Tommies shot just 3-14 from the field, including a 0-7 clip from deep. However, Montana also struggled, managing just 12 points in the second frame to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Third Quarter: St. Thomas roared out of halftime with their best stretch of the night. Trailing 38–33, the Tommies unleashed an 11–0 run fueled by stops on the defensive end and efficient scoring inside. McGowan powered the frame with six points, while Sand and Hood added key baskets. St. Thomas shot an impressive 61% in the quarter to flip the momentum and take a 52-47lead into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter: The Tommies closed with authority, turning a tight game into a double-digit victory. St. Thomas dominated the glass and the paint, with McGowan, Sand and Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) helping extend the Tommie lead to 69-57 with 3:36 to go. A late 10–2 stretch pushed the lead to its largest margin of the night at 16 points as St. Thomas secured the 81-65 win. 

UP NEXT:
St. Thomas will close the 2025 portion of the season at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. The Tommies will play four home games from December 10 – 29 before opening Summit League play on January 1, 2026. St. Thomas will kick off the final home stretch on Wednesday, December 10 when the Tommies host Crown College at 7:00 p.m.
