Tommies sweep Wildcats; Wahlin scores game-winner with 1 second remaining

12/13/2025 8:39:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Wahlin added his third goal of the weekend to lead Men’s Hockey to another late game comeback

MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (9-7-3 overall, 6-3-2 CCHA) is developing a reputation for comeback victories and late game heroics. They etched another chapter into their comeback kids' memoir on Saturday night against Northern Michigan (1-19-0, 1-11-0) when Lucas Wahlin scored with 1.0 second left on the game clock. The Toms took all six conference points from the weekend with them to St. Paul.

The Wildcats got their first of the night at 9:41 in the first period, the only score from either team in the first period. Carsen Musser returned to the net after recording his first career shutout last night but allowed three goals on 16 shots this time around.

Caige Sterzer scored his first goal of the season from Ryan O'Neill at 2:16 of the second. The game remained tied for much of the second stanza until NMU regained the lead at 16:03. The Wildcats took a two-goal lead at 2:26 of the third to put the Tommies on the back foot.

They did not stay down for long and scored three times in the final 13 minutes. Hayes Hundley got the comeback started at 7:32 from Jake Braccini and Nick Williams. Alex Gaffney ended their power play struggles with a PP tally at 12:50 from Williams and Casy Laylin to tie the game at three.

Enter Lucas Wahlin – the captain scored both goals for the Tommies in their Friday night win and found the puck freed from a mass of humanity down low, lined up the shot and fired it past the NMU netminder with one second remaining. Quinton Pepper and Nathan Pilling each assisted on Wahlin's 12th goal of the season.

St. Thomas outshot Northern 37-16 and won 34 of the game's 62 faceoffs. The Toms were 1-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. Alex Gaffney's game-tying goal was also his 12th of the season and team-leading 22nd point.

The Toms are now 1-3-2 when trailing after the first period, 1-6-0 when trailing after the second period, 4-5-2 when their opponents score first, and 4-1-0 in one goal games.
