Men’s Hockey stretches point streak to six games with 2-1 road victory

Aaron Trotter stopped 29 and Lucas Van Vliet scored the game winner

HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (6-6-3 overall, 3-2-2 CCHA) has fallen behind in each of the last six games and has not lost in regulation a single time. The sixth such game came Saturday night in the Tommies' 2-1 regulation win over the Michigan Tech Huskies (8-6-2, 5-3-2) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Aaron Trotter played tremendously with several dazzlingly acrobatic saves enroute to a 29-save performance. Alex Gaffney scored the game-tying goal on the power play and Lucas Van Vliet tallied the game winner on the penalty kill. The Tommies knocked off a Tech team that was unbeaten at home.
Michigan Tech jumped out to a one-goal lead just 38 seconds into the second period after a scoreless first frame. Trotter had made eight saves in the first period and kept a clean sheet in part thanks to a goal-saving sweep of the puck in the crease by Mason Poolman. Isaac Gordon was the only Husky capable of beating Trotter with his second goal of the season.

St. Thomas earned a power play at 5:48 and then a 5-on-3 power play at 6:49. Four seconds after the first Tech penalty expired, Alex Gaffney poked home his 11th of the season after he picked up a blocked shot from Jake Braccini. Former Husky Nick Williams earned the secondary assist.

The Tommies have deployed one of the best scoring penalty kill units in the country this season, and it made another appearance tonight. Lucas Van Vliet turned over a MTU defenseman on the blue line and carried the puck through the neutral zone on a rush. The freshman dangled toward the center and roofed a backhand shot over the left shoulder of the netminder for the Toms' first lead of the weekend.

That lead held out all the way through to the final whistle. Trotter made nine more saves in net and 29 in total for his second win of the season.
