ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team put together three strong quarters Sunday afternoon when the team hosted New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. The Tommies led 56-46 after three quarter of play, but a late surge from NJIT handed St. Thomas a narrow 68-63 loss. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 0-4 on the season.
QUICK HITS:
- Three Tommies scored in double digits Sunday afternoon: Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong), Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore). McGowan led the team with 14 points on 5-8 shooting, while Feuerbach added 10.
- Sand scored 10+ points for the fourth consecutive game, closing Sunday's contest with 12. She also added a team-leading seven rebounds and three steals.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: Both teams opened hot from the floor, shooting over 60 percent in a fast-paced first quarter. Sand helped the Tommies keep pace early, but NJIT held a 22-21 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. It was St. Thomas' most productive quarter, offensively, of the season.
Second Quarter: The Tommies took control in the second quarter with balanced scoring and strong defensive pressure. Feuerbach sparked an 8–0 run midway through the period, while a late basket by McGowan secured a 40-35 St. Thomas halftime lead.
Third Quarter: The Tommies continued to build momentum after the break. Back-to-back-to-back threes from Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) and Feuerbach seemingly swung the momentum in St. Thomas' direction, as the Tommies sprinted to a 56-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter: As in past games, St. Thomas' offense went cold late as NJIT steadily chipped away at the ten-point deficit. A trio of clutch baskets from NJIT's Marissa Gingrich helped flip the momentum, and the Highlanders closed the game on a decisive run to secure the comeback victory.
TOMMIE TIDBITS:
- The Tommies shot an impressive 55.3% from the floor, one of their most efficient performances of the young season. Additionally, St. Thomas forced 21 NJIT turnovers and scored 27 points off turnovers.
