Women’s Hockey readies to face Providence in grand opening of Lee & Penny Anderson Arena

Tommies and Friars face off for first ever game in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena

ST. PAUL, MINN.- The No.13/13 St. Thomas women's hockey team (6-2, 2-2) is set to take on the RV Providence College Friars (1-5-0, 0-2-0) in what is set to be a historic weekend for Tommie Athletics.  


Friday's contest presented by Wings Credit Union will be broadcast on Fox 9 and puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. 

Saturday's series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. puck drop. 

 

Lee & Penny Anderson Areana 

This weekend marks the grand opening of Lee & Penny Anderson Arena on the campus of St. Thomas University. This comes 34 months after announcing this transformative project.  

Tommie Women's hockey kicks off opening day with a 2 p.m. puck drop followed by the first-ever Purple on the Plaza on campus sponsored by Wings Credit Union from 4:30-6 p.m. Tommie men's hockey will then drop the puck at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out 

The Tommies earned a conference split on the road against St. Cloud after they fell 4-3 in overtime on Friday and bounced back for a 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday. 
 

In game one, Rylee BartzEllah Hause, and Cara Sajevic tallied goals for the Tommies. Graduate student goalie Julia Minotti recorded a career-high 40 saves. 

 

Although game two produced a similar score, the outcome was different as the Tommies took down No. 10 St. Cloud just 37 seconds into overtime. Ellah Hause scored her second goal of the weekend while Madison BrownIlsa Lindaman, and Jenessa Gazdik also netted goals for the Purple. Gazdik started overtime in the penalty box but was quickly released and received passes from her twin sister JuliAnna Gazdik and Ellah Hause to net the game-winner.

WCHA Leader Board 

Rylee Bartz leads the WCHA in face-off win percentage with .588. 

Rylee Bartz leads the Tommies in game-winning goals and is tied for second in the WCHA (2). 

Ella Boerger leads the Tommies and is currently second in the WCHA in assists with nine.

The Tommies have welcomed 11 newcomers to St. Paul ahead of the 2025-26 season. Three transfers and eight freshmen.

Scouting the Friars 

Providence College enters this weekend's contests 1-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in HEAW play. The Friars are coming off a weekend split against No. 9/9 Clarkson. Providence took game one 2-1 before being shutout 3-0 in Saturday's loss.  

The Friar offense is led by senior forward Reichen Kirchmair who has two goals and two assists through their first six games. Providences D-core is led by sophomore Hannah Clarke who has tallied 10 blocks and an assist. 

Providence College is led by head coach Matt Kelly who took over the program back in 2018-19. 

 

History with the Friars 

This series marks the first-ever matchup between the Providence Friars and the St. Thomas Tommies. 

 

Up Next 

The Purple will remain in St. Paul as they will finish the month of October and enter November on home ice as they take on No. 2 Ohio State at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
