Tommie Athletics to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas athletics department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day in a big way on February 5, 2025. The Tommies will host the fourth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Breakfast along with a handful of programming prior to the women's basketball game against the University of Nebraska Omaha, including a pregame panel and opportunity to participate in a postgame press conference with the team.
 
National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is held annually the first Wednesday in the month of February, looks to acknowledge and recognize the accomplishments of female in sport and women's contributions to athletics while also promoting participation and equality for girls and women.
 
This will be the first time in the DI era St. Thomas will play on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and the Tommies will look to honor their proud past and bright future with a handful of events and programming for young girls and community members. The annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day breakfast will welcome St. Thomas board of trustee member Anne Sempowski Ward, CEO of CURio Brands and member of the WNBA Chicago Sky ownership group as the featured speaker. The breakfast itself will open at 7:15 a.m. with the program set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Interest parties can RSVP at tommiesports.com.
 
Prior to Wednesday's contest against the Mavericks, St. Thomas will host a short panel featuring current and former Tommie student-athletes, coaches and administrators at 5:45 p.m. in the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex. The panel will discuss a variety of topics, including how sport and athletics shaped them into the people they are today, and will include current women's soccer student-athlete Arianna Sanchez, former women's basketball standout Maggie Negaard and Senior Associate Athletic Director and Women's Administrator Amy Cooper. The panel is open to the public, and anyone who attends will receive a free ticket to the women's basketball game.
 
Additionally, all youth groups in attendance will be invited to attend the game and participate in a variety of in game and postgame activities. The first 250 youths in attendance will receive a FREE St. Thomas scrunchie and will be invited to participate in the pregame high five tunnel and stand with the team for the national anthem. Additionally, youth groups will have the opportunity to participate in the postgame press conference featuring St. Thomas head coach Ruth Sinn and Tommie women's basketball student-athletes.
