Men’s Hockey grits out overtime victory

1/3/2025 11:15:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies won their first overtime game of the season, 3-2 over Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (5-10-4 overall, 3-6-3 CCHA) came out on top in the extra period for the first time in five tries this season with their 3-2 victory over the Lindenwood Lions (4-14-1 overall) on Friday night at Centene Community Ice Center.

Jake Braccini scored in the final minute of the first period, Cooper Gay scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the second, and Chase Foley scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Liam Malmquist assisted on two goals for a team-high 21 points. Aaron Trotter improved his season numbers with just two goals allowed on 35 shots.

Recap
Both teams entered the game with four wins to begin the second half of the 2024-25 season and it took nearly 63 minutes for one side to walk away victorious. The Toms improved to 2-0-1 all-time against Lindenwood after scoring the first goal of the game, taking a two-goal lead, losing that two-goal lead, and then scoring in overtime for the first time this year.

Jake Braccini capped off a frustrating period for the Tommies with his second goal of the season at 19:04 from former Lion, Caige Sterzer, and Chase Cheslock who increased his point streak to a career-high three games. Lindenwood dominated possession in the period and had at least five grade-A chances thwarted by Aaron Trotter in net. The junior netminder made nine saves in the frame.

The Tommies' red-hot power play cooled off in the second period going 0-for-3. With time expiring on the first power play, Liam Malmquist drew a tripping penalty on the blue line but kept the play going. He found Cooper Gay on the back door and the Tommies' leading goal scorer did the rest with two shots on net. The first was saved by former Minnesota goaltender, Owen Bartoszkiewicz but Gay got his own rebound and roofed the puck from within three feet.

Trotter and the Tommies killed off their first two penalties, two too many men penalties, one in the first and one in the second, but could not kill the third. Malmquist was called for a hook at 17:52 and the Lions scored at 18:16 to cut the Toms' lead in half heading into the second intermission.

They scored again in the third at 10:17 and neither team ended it during regulation.

Lindenwood won the opening face-off and got the first two shots of the overtime off, both saved by Trotter. Chase Cheslock launched two shots on net to answer but both were stopped by Bartoszkiewicz. Trotter made two more saves and then made a heady play after the second save by uncovering the puck to ward off a whistle and start the rush.

That play led the Tommies on a charge down the other end and the trio of Lucas Wahlin, Liam Malmquist, and Chase Foley put on an OT clinic capped off by a forehand, backhand move by the Tommie blueliner. Foley secured the victory at 2:19.

Lindenwood had the edge in shots-on-goal 35-30 and won 31 of the game's 51 face-offs. Aaron Trotter made a season-high 33 saves for a .943 save percentage.
