The Tommies erased a third period deficit with three unanswered goals
MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (6-10-4 overall, 3-6-3 CCHA) finished off its first series sweep of the season with a 4-2 come-from-behind win against the Lindenwood Lions (4-15-1 overall) on Saturday night at Centene Community Ice Center.
Luc Laylin, Lucas Wahlin, Matthew Gleason, and Ethan Gauer were the four goal scorers for the Tommies in the win. They outshot the Lions 41-25 and dominated the majority of the puck possession. Aaron Trotter added his fifth win of the season with 23 saves on 25 shots.
Recap
Neither team put the puck past the other's netminder in the first period. The Tommies got out to an 8-0 shots-on-goal advantage through the first 11 minutes before taking a tripping penalty at 11:09. They killed off that penalty but were sent back to the box at 13:39 for interference. They killed that penalty as well to keep the game scoreless.
That scoreless start stretched well into the second period until the Tommies got a power play opportunity at 14:20. They established consistent zone pressure and worked the puck around to open a one-time chance for Luc Laylin in the left circle who scored his second of the season. Casy Laylin and Chase Cheslock assisted on the play. Cheslock extended his point streak to four games.
The Tommies' lead was short-lived when Lindenwood's leading scorer, David Gagnon sent one home in the final minute of the period at 19:22. The Lions scored the first goal of the third period at 8:20 for their first lead of the series.
St. Thomas continued the pressure with six shots-on-goal before Lucas Wahlin scored his eighth of the season at 11:35 from a sharp angle in the left circle. His top-linemates Matthew Gleason and Liam Malmquist each assisted on the play.
The Purple's top line would strike again at 14:08 with a perfectly placed breakout pass from Malmquist to spring a 2-on-1 rush with Gleason and Wahlin. The Tommies' captain waited patiently before swinging the puck through the slot to Gleason on the far side. He buried his eighth of the season to retake the lead.
Lindenwood pulled their goalie at 17:58 and Ethan Gauer, playing as a forward, scored his first of the year at 18:30 against the empty net. Cheslock added his second assist of the game.
St. Thomas won the shots-on-goal battle 41-25 but lost the face-off matchup 39-27.
