9/7/2024 2:51:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Jorge Perez contributes on all three of the Tommies’ goals, including scoring the game-winning goal

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team returned to St. Paul for its third home match of the season. The Tommies (2-1-2) scored early in the back-and-forth match, ultimately defeating St. Cloud State (0-2-0) on South Field.

RECAP
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, St. Thomas men's soccer started strong with a goal just two minutes into the match as Alejandro Giner netted his first goal in Purple. Capturing momentum early, St. Thomas kept up the offensive pressure for much of the game.

The Tommies held the one goal advantage up until the midpoint of the first frame as St. Cloud State tallied its first score of the match. Each team recorded two shots on goal during the first 45 minutes, heading into halftime knotted at 1-1.

Once again, the Purple took control early in the half. Faris Colic recorded his second goal of the season off a pass from Alejandro Giner and Jorge Perez in the 49th minute to put St. Thomas back in the lead.

After the Huskies once again found the equalizer, St. Thomas continued its no quit pressure, responding quickly to regain the lead. Jorge Perez recorded his first goal of the season and fourth point of the game, posting the game-winning goal to lift the Tommies to a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.

St. Thomas totaled season-high seven shots on goal, holding the Huskies to just three during 90 minutes of play.

The Tommies are now unbeaten in their last seven home contests, remaining undefeated at home this 2024 season.

TOP TOMMIES
Jorge Perez contributed on all three of the Tommies' goals today, including scoring the game-winning goal. Perez finished the match totaling four points.
Alejandro Giner and Faris Colic each posted a goal and an assist against the Huskies.

QUOTABLE
"It was a good non-conference game; St. Cloud State came in with a solid plan and it was difficult for us to break it down," Head Coach Jon Lowery said. "After the first week of classes as student-athletes, the team came out, scored three goals and earned the win. It was a good step for us to grow."
