The Tommies climbed up to fourth place just one stroke from second in a strong field

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of St. Thomas men's golf team fought off a rough first round with consecutive strong showings to ultimately finish in fourth place out of a 14-team field at the Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club. The Tommies came up just short, one stroke behind a two-way tie for second place and two strokes from sole possession of second. The Iowa State Cyclones finished well clear of the field for the team victory, 20 strokes lower than the runners-up Drake and Bradley.

Bradley's Connor Hamm took the individual title with an incredible weekend at 13-under-par, seven strokes lower than the next closest competitor. Matthew Armstrong, again, led the way for the Tommies with an 11thplace finish. He, along with three other golfers, finished the 54-hole tournament at one-stroke-over par. Armstrong scored 74-68-72—214. His second-round 68 went three-strokes-under par and was the best round of the competition for the Tommies.

Armstrong was not the only Tommie to record a round under par. His freshman teammate, Will Schlitz finished tied for 15th place while competing as an individual with a tournament score of 69-72-74—215 (+2). His first-round 69 (-2) led the Purple during the opening 18-holes. The Eau Claire, Wisconsin native, was the third-highest finisher among those competing as individuals.

As a whole, the Toms played four rounds under par, one from Armstrong, one from Schlitz, and two from sophomore Zach Rouleau. He recorded a 17th place finish with a 76-70-70—216 (+3). Rouleau recovered tremendously after a shaky first round with back-to-back rounds at one-stroke-below par. He tallied three birdies during round two and four on the final day. The sophomore had not recorded a round below par in his collegiate career.

Owen Rexing shot four-strokes-over par with a 73-72-72—217. His consistent play managed him a 22nd place finish. The Tommies' final scoring golfer was Tyler McNeive who claimed a tie for 27th place. He shot 71-73-75—219 (+6) during his first tournament in the lineup for the Tommies.

Gavin Newkirk ended up in a tie for 39th place with a 75-73-74—222 (+9). The Tommies other individual golfer was Matthew Garside who finished play in a tie for 64th place with a 75-76-75—226 (+13).
