The Tommies leapfrogged Northern Iowa on the final day for a second place team finish
STILLWATER, Minn – The University of St. Thomas Men's Golf team carded their best round of the tournament on the final day of the Tommie Invitational at their home StoneRidge Golf Club. Their late surge launched them into second place, six strokes clear of the Northern Iowa Panthers (891, +27) and seven strokes behind the team champion North Dakota State Bison (878, +14). The Toms' highest finisher was junior, Owen Rexing whose 221 (+5) landed him in a tie for eighth place, six strokes behind the tournament's victor, Ian Simonich of NDSU (215, -1).
Rexing continued his stretch of consistently competitive golf with back-to-back postings of 73 (+1) on the first day. He performed well on both day-one back nines with two birdies in round one and round two, and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. The junior battled a crisp and windy round three with three birdies and six bogeys for a 75 (+3). Overall, he scored 73-73-75—221 (+5).
Zach Rouleau finished one stroke behind his teammate with a 74-73-75—222 (+6). He started the final day in 10th and ended in a five-way tie for 10th. He supplied the Tommies with three scoring rounds, including a team-leading second-round 73 (+1).
St. Thomas' big climber in round three was fifth-year senior, Matthew Armstrong who rose 15 places on the leaderboard on Tuesday. Armstrong tallied a 74-78-71—223 (+7) and finished in a tie for 15th place. His 71 (-1) was the Tommies' only round below par for the tournament. After two birdies on the front nine, he played bogey-free golf with birdies on 11 and 12.
Freshman, Tyler McNeive, struggled in the third round after starting the day level with Rouleau in a tie for 10thplace and concluding it in a tie for 26th place. He shot 73-74-81—228 (+12) with a team-low first round score one stroke over par. Both his first and second round scores contributed to the Tommies' tally.
Gavin Newkirk was the Toms' final golfer on the team side and finished in 49th place with an 81-83-72—236 (+20). After struggling on day one, Newkirk rallied for an even round three after spending a majority of the round three strokes below par. He was a key contributor to the Tommies' rise up to second place on Tuesday.
Matthew Garside finished in 23rd place with a 74-78-75—227 (+11) and Will Schlitz finished in 43rd place with a 79-70-85—234 (+18) while competing as individuals.
