Men’s Golf recovers with quality final round

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – St. Thomas men's golf recovered after a rocky second round on Monday with a collective round five strokes over par to jump North Dakota State for 13th place at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate at The Wigwam. Owen Rexing led the charge for the Purple with a 41st place finish.
 
Marquette earned the tournament win and finished four strokes clear of Iowa State. The Toms took 13th of 17 teams and shot better than NDSU and Kansas City but came up short against North Dakota, Denver, and Oral Roberts.
 
Round One
All four scoring golfers carded respectable rounds on the first 18, no more respectable than Owen Rexing's 70 (-2). After the senior started his day with two bogeys on his first six holes, he rallied for four birdies on his final 12 holes. Gavin Newkirk went even with three birdies and bogeys. Tyler McNeive carded a 73 and Jesse Hand a 74.
 
Round Two
McNeive carried the load on the second 18 of day one while the rest of his team struggled. He went one stroke under par with three birdies. Jesse Hand carded a 76 (+4), Mason Roloff matched that, and Owen Rexing finished the day five over par after a +7. Zach Rouleau put the pieces together as an individual with a 74 (+2).
 
Round Three
Rexing bounced back with a second 18 under par with a 71 on day two. Jesse Hand played his best golf with a round at even. Newkirk and Roloff tied with 75's (+3) to round out the Tommie scoring.
