A pair of first half goals led Women’s Soccer to victory
9/13/2024 7:31:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Tommies won their second game in a row by downing the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 2-0.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Tommie Women's Soccer (4-3-1 overall) eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time in 2024 with its 2-0 win over former Summit League opponent Western Illinois on Friday evening at South Field. The Tommies also surpassed their 2023 win total with, still, nine games remaining in 2024.
Sophia Barjesteh scored the first goal of her collegiate career off an assist from Molly Knoblauch. Seven minutes later, Summit League leading scorer Lexi Huber, led Camryn Rintoul to a goal with a perfect pass.
Recap
The Tommies, fresh off a dominant 6-0 win at South Field against Viterbo, strolled into their home contest against Western Illinois with confidence and controlled much of the action before Sophia Barjesteh tallied the game's first goal in the 11th minute. The Purple were awarded a free kick and relayed the ball around to Molly Knoblauch on the right side of the pitch. The junior planted her foot into the ground and launched a ball into the penalty box. The ball bounced once before Barjesteh slapped it into the goal for the first time in her 34-game career.
Leatherneck goalkeeper, Ariel Bernard, made her second of six saves in the 15th minute but would be bested again by wonderful Tommie ball movement at 18'. Lexi Huber feathered a pass between two WIU defenders and led Camryn Rintoul towards a grade-A scoring opportunity. For the fifth time in her career, the senior captain did not miss, and the Toms were up 2-0.
That is where the score remained as the final minutes of regulation ticked away to put the Tommies above .500 for the first time since August 25 of 2023, the last time Rintoul scored a goal.
Olivia Rowe was required to make just one save in goal to lock up her third shutout of the season. The Tommie defense has not allowed a goal in over 180 minutes. Ellie Tempero, Abby Brantner, and Molly Knoblauch played strong defense in front of Rowe for all 90 minutes.
The Tommies outshot the Leathernecks 22-2 and placed eight shots on goal to WIU's one. St. Thomas also earned eight corner kicks and allowed not one to their opponent.
Up Next
The Tommies complete their 2024 non-conference schedule in Milwaukee on Thursday, September 19thagainst the Marquette Golden Eagles (2-5-1 overall).
