Huber scores in women’s soccer road setback
8/22/2024 7:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Senior forward, Lexi Huber, scored midway through the first half for the first time this season.
DEKALB, Ill. – The University of St. Thomas women's soccer team (0-1-1) was defeated for the first time in 2024 by the Northern Illinois Huskies (1-0-1), 4-1 at the NIU Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.
Lexi Huber scored the Tommies only goal off a long boot from Lissa Mizutani. The goal was Huber's first of the season and Mizutani's assist was her first.
RECAP
Northern Illinois came out of the gate quickly with solid control of the action and the game's first three shots on goal. Olivia Rowe made two saves in the first 11 minutes but was bested by a shot from Lea Gruennagel in the 19th minute.
The Tommies did not unload their first shot on net until Lexi Huber headed one into the back of the net in the 24th minute. The Huskies were called for an offside about ten yards in front of the midfield line. Lissa Mizutani took control of the ball shortly after the free kick and, from well outside the box, booted a beautiful rainbow pass directly off Huber's head.
The first half concluded in a tie, 1-1.
The Huskies again got out on the front foot with a goal 21 minutes into the second half. Gruennagel scored her second of the game to put her squad back in front. Just over two minutes later the Huskies were on the attack once more and forced a handball on the goal line from Abby Brantner at 69 minutes. Brantner saved the goal but was shown a red card and NIU capitalized on their penalty kick with a well-placed shot from Aubrey Robertson.
St. Thomas did not put another shot on goal before Kendell Ellis substituted in for Olivia Rowe between the posts with 10 minutes to go. The Huskies scored their second goal off a set piece, this time from a near-side corner kick that pinballed around in the penalty box before skipping over the goal line last touched by Reegan Kingpavong.
Both sides finished with seven shots on net.
