Women’s Soccer suffers home setback against Minnesota

The Tommies hosted the Gophers for the first time in program history and Minnesota came out on top 4-1.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas women's soccer (0-2-1) could not contain Minnesota's (2-0-0) offensive attack and dropped the home non-conference matchup 4-1 in front of a large crowd at South Field on a blisteringly hot Sunday afternoon.
Abby Hoiska scored the Toms' only goal in the 78th minute to bring the game to a 3-1 score, at the time. Molly Knoblauch assisted on what was Hoiska's first goal of the year.
Recap
The Gophers jumped on the Tommies quickly with a goal just over four minutes into the contest. The game, originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., began at 11:00 a.m. due to the excessive heat. Sophia Romine scored the opening tally with an assist from Khyah Harper.
Harper stole the show with goals in the 39th, 50th, and 86th minutes after lending a helping-hand on Romine's score.
The Tommies placed four shots on goal and Hoiska's in the 78th minute was the only to get past Gopher goalkeeper, Sarah Martin. Molly Knoblauch made a great pressuring play and deflected a would-be pass from a Minnesota defender into clear space. Hoiska read the play perfectly and gained control of the ball. She patiently waited until Martin made her move and chipped it into the back of the net.
The Gophers finished the contest with 11 shots (six on goal) to the Tommies' eight (four on goal). Minnesota also out chanced the Purple in corner kicks (10 to 2). St. Thomas was whistled for 15 fouls against the Gophers' nine. No cards were shown in the matchup.
Noticeably missing from the Tommie back line was senior captain, Abby Brantner, who was serving a suspension for her handball red card from last Thursday against Northern Illinois. In her place, and making the first start of her season, was Annika Eckroth. She played all 90 minutes alongside Lissa Mizutani and Sydney Kubes.
Kubes has now played every minute of the 2024 season through three games.
