Four home runs lift Tommies over Golden Eagles

St. Paul, Minn. –  In a key series to secure the Summit League title, St. Thomas needs two wins this weekend to earn the conference title. In game two of the series, the Tommies (21-24, 15-10 Summit) defeated Oral Roberts (24-29-1, 13-14-1 Summit) in a comeback victory at Koch Diamond.

Oral Roberts once again took the first lead of the game. With the Golden Eagles up 7-0 after the top of the first, Max Nyrop responded with a grand slam, putting the Tommies within three runs.

Just an inning later, Joe Roder tallied an RBI-single to send home Mikey Gottschalk. With Roder on first, Max Moris recorded a two-run homer to tie the game at seven runs apiece. The first seven of the Toms' runs were scored with two outs.

Oral Roberts regained the lead in the fifth frame, holding the lead until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Matthew Maulik and Max Nyrop recorded back-to-back solo home runs, putting St. Thomas up 9-8.

Scoring on a wild pitch, the Tommies took a two-run lead going into the final inning. Carl Cano closed the game, earning his seven save of the season in the 10-9 victory.

St. Thomas needs one more victory tomorrow afternoon to secure the Summit League conference title.

Nyrop's team-leading nine home run of the season was his fifth in five games. Five Tommies recorded multi-hit games, led by Nyrop, finishing 3-for-4 with a season-high five RBI.

Max Moris tallied two runs and two RBI, going 3-for-5 on Friday afternoon.

Evan Esch and Walker Retz (2-3) combined for six Ks. Retz allowed just one run and two hits in 4.2 innings of work.
