Baseball host Oral Roberts in final series of 2024, competes for Summit League Title

In the final weekend of the 2024 season, the Tommies look to clinch the conference championship
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas baseball team returns home to host Oral Roberts in the final weekend of the 2024 season. St. Thomas baseball currently sits in the top spot in the Summit League heading into the final weekend of play. With the Summit League title on the line, the Tommies look to win two of three games to be crowned conference champions for the first time in program history.
The games are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

Last Time Out
The Tommies traveled to Omaha, Neb. for a battle of the top-two Summit League teams:
Game One – W, 11-2
•St. Thomas totaled 11 runs, scoring in five of the games' innings, with five Tommies recording multi-hit games. Max Moris finished 3-for-5, scoring two runs and tallying two RBI.
•Max Nyrop recorded two hits, two runs and three RBI in the St. Thomas victory.
•Evan Esch totaled five strikeouts and six scoreless innings, allowing four hits. Allowing one hit and no runs, Tucker Huhn tallied five strikeouts in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Game Two – L, 10-6
• Max Moris, Joe Roder, and Brigs Richartz recorded two hits against Omaha. Roder and Moris each added two runs and an RBI to finish game two against the Mavericks.
•Max Nyrop went 3-for-4, tallying a multi-RBI game for the second time this series.
Game Three – W, 6-5
• Brigs Richartz recorded the first three RBIs of the game, including two solo home runs in back-to-back at bats. Richartz finished the day 3-for-4.
• Max Nyrop broke the tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run, his second homer of the weekend. Matthew Maulik and Tanner Recchio each recorded two hits, including a double on Sunday afternoon.
•Devon Schewe, Max Skilbeck (3-0) and Carl Cano combined for seven strikeouts in the final game against the Mavericks. Holding the one-run lead in the final inning, Cano earned his sixth save of the season to help lift the Tommies over to the Mavericks.
Next up for the Tommies
• The St. Thomas baseball team host defending Summit League champions and College World Series participant, Oral Roberts
•The Golden Eagles (23-28-1, 12-13-1 Summit) is led by head coach Ryan Folmar in his 12th season.
• Earlier this season, the Tommies swept Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., earning their first sweep of the Golden Eagles program.
• The Golden Eagles have won nine of their last 11 games, including a sweep over conference opponent Northern Colorado last weekend.
Maulik making an Impact
• Matthew Maulik has the lowest strikeout percentage among qualified batters in the Summit League at .111.
• Maulik has reached base in all but seven games and had a team-leading 21 game reached base streak.
•The first year has recorded team-high 19 multi-hit games this season and leads the Tommies with seven home runs and 13 multi-RBI games so far this season.
Tommie Leaders
• So far this season, Brigs Richartz has recorded a hit in 36 games, and has reached base in 40 of 43 games played.
• Richartz ranks top-five in Summit League in batting avg. (.349), doubles (13), and hits (63).
•Richartz, Ben Vujovich, Max Moris, Joe Vos, and Mikey Gottschalk have all reached base in at least 35 games this season.
Tommie Offense
•The St. Thomas offense has exploded this spring, totaling 288 runs in 43 games played. In 2023, the Tommies recorded 186 runs through 44 games.
•Nine Tommies have combined for 39 home runs to start the season. The Tommies totaled 14 home runs a season ago.
• Matthew Maulik (.353), Brigs Richartz (.349), and Joe Roder (.331) all rank in the top-10 spots in the Summit League in batting average.

Jacob Mrsoko earned the Summit League Baseball Peak Pitcher of the week honor on Feb. 26 after his performance against SEMO:
• Earned first career win after a seven-inning, complete-game outing
• Allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out a career-high 12 Redhawks
• Surrendered just one hit and fanned 11 through the first six innings
Max Nyrop earned the Summit League Baseball Co-Peak Performer honor on May 13 after his performance against Omaha:
• Went 6-for-11 with two home runs and seven RBI in a series win over Omaha
• Both home runs put the Tommies ahead in eventual victories for UST
• Posted multiple-RBI in each game of the series and had a season-high three hits in game two
Summit League Preseason Poll
•Juniors Ben Vujovich (OF) and Evan Esch (LHP) were named the St. Thomas Player and Pitcher to Watch, as released in the 2024 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• St. Thomas was selected to finish sixth in the Summit Preseason Poll.
Leading the Pack
• Chris Olean begins his 15th season with St. Thomas in 2024. He has totaled an overall record of 384-234-1 (338-148-1 in NCAA Division III) since being named the head coach prior to the 2010 season.
• Olean is a three-time NCAA DIII Region Coach of the Year and closed out its DIII era by winning championships in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and region en route to a national runner-up finish and 37-10 record.
• During the last 12 DIII seasons the Purple won eight MIAC Championships, capped by third-place national finishes in both 2012 and 2014, in addition to the runner-up finish in 2021.
• Olean mentored seven DIII All-American pitchers. He was voted MIAC and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2021. In addition, Olean works with the Tommie pitching staff, which was a perennial top-10 group in DIII baseball.
