Men set distance medley relay record at Penn, women break 4x400m relay mark at Drake
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A pair of relay teams broke program records for St. Thomas track & field at the Drake Relays and Penn Relays April 26-27.
The men's distance medley relay of Cameron Heppner, Mitchell Piehl, Thomas Dundon and Max Westerlund set the program record in the event with a time of 9:49.40, taking ninth at the Penn Relays. The previous record of 9:52.74 was set in 1985 at the Drake Relays, which included men's head coach Pete Wareham as part of the relay.
The women's 4x400-meter relay of Rebecca Randleman, Alexis Pratt, Hailey Hindt and Olivia Keller won the event at the Drake Relays, setting the program record with a time of 3:44.77. The previous record of 3:44.92 was set in 2013 at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Penn Relays
Besides the DMR, the only other event ran by the Tommies at the Penn Relays was the 4x800m. The team of John Morrison, Heppner, Westerlund and Dundon took eighth with a time of 7:34.27, which ranks second all-time at St. Thomas.
Drake Relays
The women totaled five top-10 finishes, including the lone event win of the meet by the 4x400m relay. Anna Swanson and Alyssa Whaley each finished top five of their respective javelin events, Swanson taking fourth with a throw of 46.99m (154-feet-2-inches) and Whaley taking fifth with a mark of 39.21m (128-7). Thoughts from head coaches Pete Wareham and Ashley Lucas after the relay meets:
"This is a really fun time of year where we get big meets and great competition. We set a school record out at the Penn Relays in the DMR that was set 40 years ago. We also had the No. 2 all-time 4x800-meter relay ran at the Penn Relays and our hurdlers did well out at the Drake Relays.
"We get to enjoy our accomplishments to date and look forward to fine tuning things this week at our home meet. Staying healthy and in a good mindset is critical at this point and I believe our guys are there. I am super excited for the next couple of weeks."
– Head Coach Pete Wareham
"We had a great showing at the Drake Relays. Yesterday's crew dealt with some weather delays and less than ideal conditions but stayed composed and competed well. An excellent run by the 4x400-meter relay was a great way to cap off the weekend. Now, we will continue to sharpen up and compete at home this Wednesday (May 1) before hosting the Summit League the following week (May 9-11). Make sure to come out and support your Tommies!"
– Head Coach Ashley Lucas
