Klein added a home run in game one and a complete game in game two.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (16-32, 8-7 Summit League) completed their season sweep of the Green Bay Phoenix (7-34, 3-15 Horizon League) behind two complete game victories by Christina Crawford and Morgan Klein in 7-1 and 5-4 contests.
GAME ONE RECAP
Both teams kept the scoreboard quiet through the first inning. However, in the second inning, Green Bay managed to break the silence with a single run. Morgan Klein reached base on an error to lead off the bottom of the inning, Abbi Stierlen's sacrifice fly moved Klein to third. Klein later scored on a Kenzie Miller sacrifice fly.
With the score deadlocked at one as the game entered the fourth inning, the Tommies' offense came to life. Abbi Stierlen started the rally with a single up the middle. Following her lead, Kenzie Miller worked a walk, setting the stage for senior Brooke Betson. Betson unleashed a triple that sailed over the head of the left fielder, driving in two crucial runs.
As Green Bay struggled to get their offense going in the next inning, the Tommies continued to capitalize on their momentum. Kaitlyn Raymond's walk at the start of the fifth inning set the stage. Laken Lienhard followed up with a double to left field, bringing Raymond home and stretching the Tommies' lead to three runs. Morgan Klein stepped up and blasted a two-run homer to center field, giving the Tommies a comfortable 6-1 lead. The Toms could not add on any further despite Kameron Monson's two-out double.
In the sixth inning, Green Bay applied pressure on pitcher Christina Crawford as they loaded the bases with only one out. However, Crawford secured two crucial outs, escaping the jam and preventing any damage to the St. Thomas lead.
Following Kaitlyn Raymond's walk, Cassidy Carby's single added to the Tommies offensive drive. With Morgan Klein's patient walk loading the bases, Abbi Stierlen's subsequent walk brought Raymond home, securing the Tommies' seventh run of the game.
Christina Crawford sealed the victory for the Tommies with a strong finish, pitching three consecutive outs in the final inning to secure her complete game performance.
GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game, Morgan Klein took the mound for the Tommies and efficiently retired the side, securing three consecutive outs in the first inning. The Tommies wasted no time getting their offense going. Laken Lienhard kick-started the momentum with a single to right field, followed by singles from Cassidy Carby and Morgan Klein, loading the bases. Abbi Stierlen replicated her performance from game one by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, allowing Lienhard to cross home plate and score the first run of the game. Following the run, Maddie Grad hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Carby and put the Purple up two runs.
Morgan Klein's stellar pitching performance extended into the second and third innings, where she retired the side without allowing any Green Bay players to reach base. Klein retired nine consecutive Green Bay batters with two strikeouts in the second.
Klein then ignited a third-inning rally with a single, then capitalized on a Green Bay throwing error to advance herself to second base and Carby to third. With runners in scoring position, Abbi Stierlen delivered her third RBI of the day with a single through the left side, pushing St. Thomas ahead by three runs. Following suit from her previous at-bat, Maddie Grad executed a sacrifice fly to score Klein, further extending the lead to four runs.
Green Bay brought an end to Klein's perfect game in the fourth inning. After allowing a single, they managed to score their only run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, breaking the shutout and putting a dent in the Tommies' lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Brooke Betson kickstarted the Tommies' offense with a leadoff double. She then advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt executed by Sydney Mickett. With a runner in scoring position, Kaitlyn Raymond delivered a clutch RBI triple to left-center field, driving in Betson and extending the Tommies' lead by four runs.
In the fifth inning, Green Bay staged a rally to narrow the gap. Their first run of the inning came across the plate on a passed ball. With two runners advancing to scoring position, the Phoenix capitalized on the opportunity, delivering a single and sacrifice fly that brought in two more runs, significantly narrowing the Tommies' lead to just one run.
In the fifth and sixth innings, the Tommies were unable to add to their lead, leaving the score unchanged. However, Morgan Klein stepped up in the final innings, delivering six consecutive outs to pitch a complete game and secure the victory for the Tommies. Klein's strong finish capped off an impressive performance, totaling five perfect innings pitched in the victory.
