The Tommies kept game one close but could not end nation’s longest win streak.
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (16-34, 8-9 Summit League) fell in both games to the conference-undefeated and first place South Dakota State Jackrabbits (30-18, 13-0) by scores of 5-2 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jackrabbit Stadium.
GAME ONE RECAP
Morgan Klein got the start for the Tommies in the circle to face-off with two-time Summit League Pitcher of the Year, Tori Kniesche. Klein held the Jackrabbits off the scoreboard in the first but allowed four runs (three on a home run) after a fielding error in the second inning.
SDSU added another run in the bottom of the third against Klein who tossed four innings while allowing five earned runs on eight hits and three walks against the conference's most dynamic offensive team.
The Toms could not solve Kniesche through the first three innings as they were set down in order through their first 10 at-bats. Until the Summit League's leader in walks, Laken Lienhard, drew her 30th of the season. Next, Cassidy Carby capitalized on the first pitch and smacked a ball over the center field fence to make it a 5-2 game. Before Carby's blast, Kniesche had given up just one earned run in Summit League play this season. The Toms drew two more walks (Morgan Klein and Kameron Monson) but could not score again.
Keira Murphy came in to pitch the final two innings for the Purple and allowed just one walk and one hit during her scoreless outing. She also punched out one Jackrabbit.
The Toms only other baserunner was Laken Lienhard who singled to lead off the sixth inning.
GAME TWO RECAP
It was Christina Crawford in the circle for the Tommies in the second game and the redshirt sophomore continued her complete game streak but could not extend her win streak. She did not allow a run until the third inning when she was thrown out of rhythm by two defensive errors from her infield.
Crawford pitched all five innings of the 8-0 defeat as she allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits, one walk with two strikeouts.
Offensively the Tommies had plenty of opportunities but could not cash in.
They had runners on the corners to lead off the first inning after back-to-back singles from Kaitlyn Raymond and Laken Lienhard, but after a strikeout, a runner caught stealing, and a lineout, they came up empty-handed.
Again in the second inning they left two runners on base after Abbi Stierlen led off the inning with a walk and Maddie Grad followed with a two-out free pass of her own. After a quiet third inning they left the bases loaded in the fourth.
Morgan Klein got the inning started with a double but remained at second after a one-out single from Brooke Betson. Maddie Grad walked once again with two outs to load the bases as Christina Crawford struck out in a full count with the bases loaded.
The Toms were outhit 10-4 as they fell 8-0 in five innings.
