Softball fell in a close game one, 3-2, but answered back with an impressive 8-1 win in game two.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (5-25, 1-1 Summit League) produced a conference-opening split against the Kansas City Roos (12-19, 1-1 Summit League) on the back of two competitive pitching performances from Christina Crawford and Ella Cook.
The Tommies' sophomore tandem went a combined 14 innings pitched with just four earned runs on seven hits, five walks, with 14 strikeouts. The offense showed up for Cook with eight runs of support in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
Crawford struck out eight Roo batters but was upended by just one problematic inning. She gave up all three of Kansas City's runs in the fourth inning on a pair of singles. Outside of that fourth inning, she gave up just one hit and one walk.
The Toms only scored in the top of the third inning. Avery Wukawitz took a fastball high and away to the opposite field for her third home run of the season to lead off the fruitful frame.
After back-to-back walks by Laken Lienhard and Crawford, game-two starter Ella Cook doubled to score Lienhard from second.
Both sides came away with four hits in the close contest, but the Roos came out on top. The Tommies tallied three errors on defense.
GAME TWO RECAP
Neither team got on the scoreboard until the Toms struck in the top of the fourth inning with four runs. Crawford helped her fellow pitcher with a two-run single to score Laken Lienhard and Kaitlyn Raymond. Ruby Moore came in to pinch run and quickly came home to score from third on a passed ball by the Kansas City catcher.
The Purple's final run came on an Abbi Stierlen double to the left-center field gap that scored pitcher Ella Cook.
Cook struck out three and worked around five baserunners in the first three innings before giving up the only run of her outing in the bottom of the fourth. She gave up a lead-off single, but the batter ended up on second base due to an outfield error. That runner moved up to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly.
St. Thomas answered right back with another four-run frame in the fifth.
Laken Lienhard got things started with a lead-off single followed by a Christina Crawford base hit. Abbi Stierlen walked with one out to load the bases for Morgan Klein. The sophomore outfielder laced a ball to the right-center field gap to score both Lienhard and Crawford. Five pitches later, Cassidy Carby brought home two more runs on her second double of the contest.
Ella Cook went the distance for the complete game victory and retired all 12 of the last batters she faced following that fourth-inning sacrifice fly. She gave up three hits, two walks, and struck out six in total.
The Tommies had four hitters with multi-hit games: Laken Lienhard (2-3, 2R, HBP), Christina Crawford (2-3, R, 2RBI), Ella Cook (2-4), and Cassidy Carby (2-2, 2RBI, 2 2B, BB).
