Cook tosses second consecutive complete game victory

3/24/2024 2:26:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies defeated the Kansas City Roos 5-1 in game three to take the Summit League series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (6-25, 2-1 Summit League) found a fresh start with a Summit League season-opening series victory over the Kansas City Roos (12-20, 1-2 Summit League) after a dominant 5-1 victory in game three.

Ella Cook made the start in the circle for the Tommies and retired the first 12 batters she faced in order through four innings. The sophomore won her fifth game of the season (5-6) in complete game fashion for the second straight game. She allowed just one earned run on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts. She also added the only multi-hit game for St. Thomas with the Toms' lone extra-base hit.

Morgan Klein (1-2, RBI, BB, 2SB) and Laken Lienhard (1-3, 2R, RBI, BB) each reached base twice in the 5-1 win. The Tommies stole five bases, two from Klein, and one from Avery Wukawitz, Cook, and Kameron Monson (her first career steal).

GAME RECAP
It was clear the Tommies had a gameplan in mind to start the game, jump on the opposition early. Avery Wukawitz implemented that plan with ease as she bunted the game's first pitch for a leadoff single. One pitch later the speedy center fielder was on second with her team-leading eighth stolen base of the season.

Laken Lienhard roped a one-out single to left-center field to score Wukawitz from second and put the Toms on top. Next up was the pitcher Ella Cook, and she wasted no time in doubling the Purple's lead with a double to bring around Lienhard.

Cook sent down the first six Roo batters in a row without the ball leaving the infield. Shortly after, the Toms brought home their last three runs of the game in the top of the third.

Lienhard led off the effort with a six-pitch walk, her team-leading 19th of the year. Cook fouled off six pitches before placing a ball in right-center field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Cook then stole second and as the ball got away from the middle infield covering, Lienhard took the initiative to score on the play. Abbi Stierlen lost one RBI opportunity in the ordeal but did successfully bring home Cook from second on a single down the left field line. Morgan Klein's then singled to score Stierlen from third and put the Toms up 5-0.

The Iowa City native, Cook, was still perfect after four innings until Kansas City ruined her no-hit bid on the fifth pitch of the fifth inning with a single. They broke up the shutout effort in the bottom of the sixth, but could not stop Cook from her second straight complete game.

UP NEXT
The Tommies doubleheader with the Drake Bulldogs has been canceled with no make-up date yet announced. As of now the Purple will return home for the first time in 2024 for a Wednesday doubleheader with the Green Bay Phoenix at South Field.
