The Tommies fell to Idaho State 2-1 and Santa Clara 12-0.
BOISE, Ida. – St. Thomas Softball (4-23) could not put the pieces together on Saturday, falling 2-1 to the Idaho State Bengals (16-12) in game one and 12-0 in five innings to the Santa Clara Broncos (15-9) in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
Christina Crawford tossed a complete game and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts, but the Tommies' offense came up just short against the Idaho State Bengals.
The Tommies went down quietly in the top of the first inning despite a one-out single and steal of second base by Kaitlyn Raymond. The Bengals pounced on their first-inning opportunity with a two-out single through the middle of the infield to score a runner on second base. Crawford would not allow another run for three consecutive innings.
St. Thomas gave their pitcher a single run in the top of the second. Laken Lienhard led off the inning with a single but was retired at second on an Abbi Stierlen fielder's choice. Kameron Monson singled Stierlen to second. Kenzie Miller singled up the middle to bring home a runner and tie the game at one.
From the second inning on, the Tommies could muster just one hit (an Avery Wukawitz double), a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Their best scoring chance came in the top of the fifth inning when Wukawitz and Kaitlyn Raymond were on first and second base with just one out.
Idaho State scored the game-winning run in that fifth inning on a one-out solo home run.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Santa Clara Broncos opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with seven runs, primarily on two home runs. They added one run in the third and four more in the fourth.
The Toms' only hits of the game were an Ella Cook single in the second that was followed by a Kameron Monson walk, a Laken Lienhard single in the fourth, and a Jenna Kuhn pinch-hit-single in the fifth with two outs.
St. Thomas loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but could not scratch any runs across to prolong the game and avoid the eight-run rule.
UP NEXT
The Tommies finish out the City of Trees Classic with a rematch against the Santa Clara Broncos at noon CST.
