Tommies back on top with 4-2 win over Minnesota State
2/3/2024 10:04:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Men’s Hockey jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and secured three CCHA points from the Minnesota State Mavericks in Mankato.
MANKATO, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (13-12-1, 11-7-0 CCHA) defeated Minnesota State (14-10-4, 10-6-2) by a score of 4-2 for its first regulation win against the Mavericks in Mankato. The Tommies won the season series and snatched up seven of the 12 conference points possible against Minnesota State.
Cooper Gay scored two goals in the game and three against the Mavs this weekend. His second goal of the game was the game-winner, his fourth (GWG) of the season.
Aaron Trotter was a late addition into the Toms' net just moments before puck-drop and capitalized on the extra start. The sophomore made multiple highlight reel stops with 33 saves on 35 shots faced. He also assisted on the Toms' final goal, his second assist of the series.
RECAP
St. Thomas lost in heartbreaking fashion in game one but left no doubt of their intention to come away with a series victory. The Tommies scored 76 seconds into the contest. Cooper Gay scored his 10th of the season off an assist from Mack Byers.
The Toms let a power play opportunity slip away but pounced once again at 8:44 on a Minnesota State turnover. A Maverick pass off the boards behind the net took a fortunate bounce to Liam Malmquist who finished the play off with his seventh goal of the season. Minnesota State answered with a power play goal at 13:26.
Both teams scored a goal in the second period. Cooper Gay put the Toms out in front by two at 2:03 on the power play. Luc Laylin and Ryan O'Neill each assisted on the Gay tip-in goal. The Mavs did not go quietly and answered eight minutes later to bring the score to 3-2.
The Mavericks dominated a majority of the second period and outshot the Toms 13-3. Aaron Trotter made 12 saves to keep the Purple out in front.
Mack Byer's empty-net goal with 24 seconds remaining was the only tally for either side in the final frame.
Minnesota State outshot St. Thomas 35-21 but Aaron Trotter was too much to handle in net. The Tommies blocked 23 shots in front of their netminder. 32 of 60 faceoffs were won by the Tommies.
