Men's Hockey earns CCHA point in critical series opener
2/23/2024 11:53:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies battled the first-place Bemidji State Beavers to overtime but fell 6-5 in the extra period.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (13-16-2, 11-9-1 CCHA) twice trailed Bemidji State (14-15-2, 12-7-2) by two goals, and scored at 19:35 in the third period with an extra attacker to force three-on-three overtime, where they fell 6-5 on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
GAME RECAP
The visiting Beavers opened the 11-goal affair at 11:22 of the first period on their fifth shot of the game after killing off two St. Thomas power plays in the first 10 minutes. The third time was the charm for the Tommies' power play when Luc Laylin slapped a shot by Bemidji goaltender Mattias Sholl while on the man advantage at 14:36.
The Beavers answered back under two minutes later at 16:06 to restore their one-goal lead. The Tommies outshot BSU 13-9 in the first stanza.
A goal at 2:40 of the second period granted Bemidji its first two-goal lead of the game. The Toms battled back with a beautiful breakout play from Ethan Gauer in the Tommies' end to Matthew Gleason in the neutral zone who found Lucas Wahlin streaking towards the net. The sophomore captain buried the puck with a backhand to cut the Beavers lead back down to one.
Bemidji State once again scored, this time at 13:21. They gave the Tommies another opportunity on the power play four minutes later and Mason Poolman sent home his second of the season at 19:15 to propel the Toms into the locker room trailing by one goal.
The Purple tied the game at four goals apiece on freshman Cole Miller's first career goal at 3:51 of the third period, J.D. Metz and Luke Manning teamed up for the assists. Once again, the Beavers had an answer, this time just over one minute later at 5:08.
Head Coach Rico Blasi pulled goaltender Aaron Trotter at 17:18 in favor of an extra attacker. The Beavers made multiple attempts at the empty net but could not score. Those misses left the door open for the Tommies and they walked right through. Mason Poolman put a shot on net from the Tommies' end, Bemidji State's clearance attempt on the rebound was batted out of the air by Liam Malmquist. The junior settled the puck and passed it to Luke Manning. The most experienced Tommie picked his spot and with 25 seconds remaining equalized the game.
The Beavers ultimately came away with the extra conference point in overtime.
St. Thomas outshot the Beavers 33-30 and won 41 of 76 faceoffs. They were 2-4 on the power play and did not have to kill a penalty.
UP NEXT
The Tommies are back at it for game two against the first place Bemidji State Beavers at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena tomorrow for a 6:07 p.m. puck drop.
