Sibell saves season-high 37 as Tommies fall to Bemidji State
2/24/2024 10:49:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Jake Sibell stopped 37 of the 40 pucks he faced including all 20 shots in the second period as the Tommies dropped game two at home against Bemidji State 3-1.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (13-17-2, 11-10-1 CCHA) battled Bemidji State (15-15-2, 12-7-2) to the brink, but two third period goals from the Beavers were too much for the Tommies to handle on Saturday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
GAME RECAP
The opening minutes of Saturday's contest past without much fanfare until Lucas Wahlin drew a penalty shot at 6:55 of the first. The sophomore broke out of St. Thomas' end with the puck and nobody to beat but the goaltender. Lleyton Roed of Bemidji State slapped Wahlin with his stick to prevent a Tommie goal and he was whistled for interference.
Head coach Rico Blasi and the Toms chose to take the penalty shot as opposed to a two-minute power play. Wahlin meandered his way towards the front of the net and by the time he ripped his shot attempt away, Mattias Sholl had worked to the top of his crease and made a save with his pad. The Beaver's netminder finished the game with 23 saves on 24 shots.
The Tommies' Luke Manning was called for a trip at 11:28 and Bemidji took the lead on the power play at 13:12. Shots on goal finished even at 11-11 after the opening twenty minutes.
Jake Sibell put on a show in the second period in which his team was outshot 20-6. The junior netminder did not let a puck through while rifling off a pair of highlight reel saves to keep his team in the game. Neither side broke through in the period.
Bemidji State scored to open the third at 6:25. Eric Pohlkamp ripped a shot from the point that deflected off the back of St. Thomas' Cole Miller who was in the crease in the midst of a net-front battle with Roed.
The Beavers added another at 12:35 and stretched their lead to three. Liam Malmquist got the Toms on the board 18 seconds later with a backhanded shot in the slot after picking up his own rebound that deflected off Sholl. The goal was Malmquist's eighth of the year. Lucas Wahlin and Matthew Gleason notched the assists.
St. Thomas pulled Sibell in favor of the extra attacker at 17:40 but could not reel in the Beavers.
UP NEXT
The Tommies wrap up their 2023-24 regular season with two games against the Michigan Tech Huskies whom they swept in Minnesota in January. Game one is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. CST on Friday night followed by a 5:07 p.m. CST puck drop on Saturday.
