The Tommies drop second consecutive heartbreaker at home
2/17/2024 10:40:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Bowling Green scored in the first minute and again in the second period, the Tommies late-game surge was not enough to earn the win.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (13-15-2, 11-8-1 CCHA) was bested by a Bowling Green Falcons team (13-16-1, 11-8-1 CCHA) that has won six consecutive conference games. Bowling Green scored the contest's first goal 54 seconds in and never coughed up the lead.
GAME RECAP
Bowling Green scored on their first shot of the game just 54 seconds in. They silenced an energetic crowd just settling into their seats for what was a battle at the top of the CCHA. The remaining 19+ minutes of the first period produced no scoring, St. Thomas went 0-1 on the power play.
At 10:53 in the second, the Falcons struck again. They doubled their lead with less than half of regulation to play. BGSU maintained their two-goal margin for the remainder of the period and returned to their locker room on their first and only power play.
St. Thomas killed off the remaining 1:52 left on the Falcon power play to begin the final frame. One minute and ten seconds later the Tommies answered with a power play tally, their second of the series. Ryan O'Neill sent a pass on the blue line to Ethan Gauer. The senior (playing his 100th career game) sent a seeing-eye shot through traffic and perfectly onto the ideally placed stick of Matthew Gleason (also playing in his 100th game) to bring the Toms to within one goal.
The Purple fired off 21 more shots in the period (12 on goal) but could not best the reigning CCHA Goaltender of the Week, Cole Moore who made 24 saves on 25 shots faced.
Jake Sibell was pulled in favor of an extra attacker with 1:51 remaining in the contest, and drama ensued. Liam Malmquist fired off one shot saved by Moore and after the play was blown dead, Seth Fyten cross-checked Lucas Wahlin squarely in the back. The referees took note and promptly sent Fyten to the penalty box.
The Tommies had a power play and an extra attacker at 18:36, head coach Rico Blasi called a timeout before a crucial faceoff in Bowling Green's end. Luc Laylin got a shot off at 18:56 that was blocked by a Bowling Green defenseman. Just moments later Ethan Gauer made a game-saving block to deprive Ethan Scardina of an empty-net goal.
Fifteen seconds later it again was Gauer as the last line of defense. This time the senior was called for a tripping penalty in his attempt to break up the play and the Falcons were granted the goal as the final blow to St. Thomas' comeback bid.
The Tommies outshot the Falcons 31 to 25 and won 50 of 74 faceoffs. Bowling Green was 0-1 on the power play, the Tommies were 1-4.
