Baseball earns first win of the season against Illinois State, 20-8

Tommies wrap up Snowbird Classic with a win against the Redbirds
Against the Redbirds, the Tommies scored 20 runs, defeating Illinois State in game one of the day. Today's game marked the second time in the DI-era that Tommie baseball has scored 20+ runs, the last time coming from a 21-9 win over Northern Colorado last season.
Although the Tommies held the early lead over Saint Louis in game two, the Billikens tallied seven runs in the seventh inning to defeat St. Thomas, 15-7.
Recap vs Illinois State
The Tommies tallied a season-high 18 hits and recorded multiple runs in six of nine innings against the Redbirds. All but one starter recorded a hit and a run, and all but two drove in an RBI.
Mikey Gottschalk, Ben Vujovich, Max Nyrop and Joe Roder combined for 15 runs, with Roder leading the Tommies with five RBIs.
The Tommies have recorded 10 home runs this season, including five against the Redbirds in Saturday's game. Joe Roder (2), Joe Vos, Matthew Maulik, and Max Nyrop all tallied home runs against Illinois State.
In the final three innings, the Tommies totaled 12 runs to secure the victory over the Redbirds. Devon Schewe (1-0) earned the win after throwing 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and seven hits allowed. Kolby Gartner threw the final 4.0 innings, recording two strikeouts and recording the save.
Recap vs Saint Louis
St. Thomas and Saint Louis each scored a run during the first inning, while the second remained scoreless. St. Thomas took the 3-1 in the top of the third inning, as Gottschalk recorded an 2-RBI single, driving in Tanner Recchio and Maulik.
The Tommies extended their lead, scoring three runs in top of fifth as Recchio hit a 2-RBI double, and scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball. After five innings, the Purple held the 6-2 lead over the Billikens.
However, Saint Louis responded with 13 runs in the final three innings at bat to earn the 15-7 victory over the Purple.
Recchio and Vujovich recorded two hits, while Recchio and Gottschalk each drove in two runs in the final game of the Snowbird Classic.
