Ella Cook pitched a complete game shutout in the Tommies’ game one victory and added a three run home run in their game two defeat.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (1-6) defeated the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (1-1) in game one of the Easton Bama Bash but fell to the hosting #11 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Toms were the visitors on the neutral site field against the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana and they took advantage with a quick strike in the top of the first inning. Avery Wukawitz led off the game with a walk and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. From there, Cassidy Carby drove a ball to right field. The right fielder misplayed it resulting in a two-base error that landed Carby on second and Wukawitz across home plate.
Ella Cook got the nod from head coach Jen Trotter and tossed a scoreless first frame with one strikeout, a taste of what was to come for the rest of the game.
St. Thomas broke things open in the second inning. Adrianna Young got it started with a lead-off double, Sydney Mickett's one-out single scored her teammate from second. Kaitlyn Raymond moved Mickett 60 feet with a single of her own. Laken Lienhard walked with two outs to load the bases for Cassidy Carby.
Sydney Mickett scored on a wild pitch in the Carby at-bat. Then the redshirt-sophomore doubled down the left field line to bring home both Lienhard and Raymond to put the Toms' up 5-0, where it would stay for the rest of the afternoon.
Ella Cook went the distance without allowing a run to deliver the Toms their first win of 2024. She finished the day allowing five hits, four walks, while striking out a season-high six.
Both Cassidy Carby and Kaitlyn Raymond notched multi-hit days. Carby and Young's doubles were the only extra-base hits of the game for St. Thomas. Avery Wukawitz walked and singled at the top of the Purple's lineup.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Toms were deadlocked with the #11 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide until the bottom of the second inning when the Tide broke through for three runs.
St. Thomas answered right back to tie it with three runs in the top of the third inning. Laken Lienhard hustled her way to first and reached on an error, she then advanced to second on a Cassidy Carby walk. Ella Cook, coming off her complete game shutout stepped into the box with two outs. She ripped the ball to straight away center field for a three-run home run, the third of her career.
Christina Crawford worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning to keep the game level. The Toms were unable to score in the top of the fourth despite Kaitlyn Raymond's one-out walk. Alabama retook the lead for the final time with the game's last scoring in the fourth, they scored four.
Alabama's reliever Jaala Torrence struck out nine of the 11 Tommies she faced to shut the door.
Cassidy Carby got on safely twice for the second game in a row with a walk and a hit.
