Freshman recorded multi-hit performance Saturday against Southern Indiana
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Freshman Loryn Barney powered the bats for St. Thomas softball Saturday afternoon as the squad fell short in games against No. 11 Alabama and Southern Indiana. The Tommies (1-8) fell to the host Crimson Tide, 8-0, before Barney came up with a two-hit day, her first career hits with the Purple, in a loss to the Screaming Eagles, 4-1.
GAME ONE RECAP
Alabama (8-0) took control of the game from the words "play ball" on day two of the Easton Bama Bash. Their starter, Jaala Torrence, struck out the side in the first inning and the Crimson Tide chased the Tom's starter Keira Murphy before she recorded an out.
Alabama scored in all five innings of the run-rule shortened affair. They grabbed two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and fourth, and one more to seal the deal in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Tommies did not record a base hit until the fifth inning, Abbi Stierlen broke up the no-hit bid and Sydney Mickett slapped a single in the final frame as well.
GAME TWO RECAP
Southern Indiana (1-3) scored its four runs unanswered to start the game, driving in two runs on an RBI single and an RBI double in the top of the first inning. USI extended its lead following a Tommie fielding error in the second inning before a sac fly in the top of the sixth drove in the Screaming Eagles' final run of the game.
Barney, following her first career hit on a single in the fifth inning, reached base in the seventh on a one-out double to left center. Following walks to senior Sydney Mickett and sophomore Avery Wukawitz, a fielding error by USI allowed Barney to score the lone Tommie run of the game.
Barney tallied two of the Toms' four hits on the day, including the only extra-base hit, while another four reached on walks. Junior Christina Crawford (0-4) threw a complete game with three strikeouts and three walks allowed.
UP NEXT
The Toms wrap up the Easton Bama Bash with first-time opponent Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 18. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT in Tuscaloosa.
