PALM DESERT, Calif. – The University of St. Thomas Women's Golf squad got 2024 started out with a smooth swing and took down North Dakota State in the first round of the Mountain Classic Match Play tournament.
The competition consists of eight teams, each with five athletes apiece. Each team is matched up with one other team, and the five athletes compete in head-to-head match play. The golfer with the lower score on a hole wins the hole, the golfer with the most holes won after 18, wins the matchup. The team with the most matchup wins moves onto the next round.
The Tommies won three of their five matchups against the Bison. Emma Davies, Isabelle Lynch, and Kathryn VanArragon defeated their individual opposition.
Davies carded a +3 over 17 holes and won by three holes. She finished strong with wins on each of the last three, including two pars on 15 and 16 and a birdie on 17.
Lynch carded a +4 and won by two holes over the entire 18. She entered the final frame with a one-hole lead and needed to at least tie the hole to ensure victory. She birdied the par-four.
VanArragon, the reigning Summit League Golfer of the Month, dominated her matchup. She won by four holes over just 15 holes played. The freshman did not bogey a hole on day one and added four birdies.
St. Thomas will play Boise State tomorrow for the semi-final round. The Broncos defeated the Portland State Vikings, 3-2.
Quoting Coach Hanneman
"I am so proud of the team after this first match. Lots of back and forth and changing of momentum. North Dakota State is a great team and we are excited to come out with a win. We will use what we learned today to match up with Boise State tomorrow."
