Women’s Hockey hosts #3 Minnesota in final series of 2024

The Tommies welcome the Gophers, completing the first half of the season at Saint Thomas Ice Arena

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team is back at home, hosting #3 Minnesota in the final series of 2024, presented by Twin Cities Orthopedics. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 6, and 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Scouting the Golden Gophers
The #3 Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-4-1, 7-4-1 WCHA) are led by Head Coach Brad Frost in his 17th season with the program.
 
The Minnesota offense ranks ninth in the nation in scoring (50 goals), led by Abbey Murphy who has totaled 13 goals and 24 points through 16 games played.
 
The Gophers come into this weekend 5-1-0 in their six games through the month of November, falling to St. Cloud State in their final contest of the month.
 
History Against the Gophers
The Tommeis have competed against Minnesota more times than any other opponent in the DI-era, including two WCHA Play-off series at Ridder Arena.
 
The Gophers hold an 16-0 all-time record against St. Thomas.

Through Dec. 4th, Rylee Bartz ranks fifth in the WCHA in face-off wins (173) and ninth in face-off percentage (.521). Bartz's 173 face-off wins ranks 14th in the nation.

Four Tommies have earned WCHA Weekly honors to start the season:
WCHA Pre-Season Poll
Tommie Women's Hockey was picked to finish sixth in the eight-team WCHA preseason poll, voted on by league head coaches.

Last season's national runner-up Wisconsin was selected among league head coaches to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's 2024-25 regular season title. The top four teams in the poll qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year.
 
2023-24 Record Setters
Last season, the Tommies set a DI era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 17 skaters scored goals for the Tommies, led by Ella Boerger, who found the back of the net 11 times. Boerger's 11 goals also set a record of goals scored in a single season.
 
In 37 games played, Boerger (11G, 13A – 24P), Bartz (10G, 13A – 23P), Nicole Vallario (5G, 10A – 15P), and Maddie Brown (6G, 8A - 14P) all passed the DI single season record in points scored for the Tommies.  The previous record was 13 total points set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season).
 
Bartz, Boerger, Vallario and Maddy Clough also surpassed the single season record in assists (previously 8), and Bartz tied record for power play goals scored in a single season (3). 
 
Tommie Newcomers
Tommie Hockey welcomed seven newcomers ahead of the 2024-25 season. Six freshmen and one transfer make up the class:
Schedule Talk    
St. Thomas ends the first half of the season hosting Minnesota Dec. 6-7, and opens the second half at Ridder Arena from Jan. 10-11.
 
St. Thomas plays eight of its final 14 games at home in 2025, including series against Wisconsin, Duluth and Bemidji State.
 
The Tommies wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Minnesota State, playing the series finale at Saint Thomas Ice Arena on Feb. 22.
