The Huskies scored at 1:11 and then 31 seconds after Cooper Gay’s 8th of the season in the third
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Battles between St. Cloud State (11-7-0, 4-4-0 NCHC) and St. Thomas (4-10-4, 3-6-3 CCHA) have been as tight as possible over the last two seasons and Sunday evening's affair at Herb Brooks Hockey Center was no different. The Huskies took down the Tommies by a score of 2-1 with timely goal scoring and a strong goaltending effort.
Cooper Gay tallied the Tommies' only goal at 15:17 for his team-leading eighth of the season. Aaron Trotter made 31 saves in the losing effort as the Tommies' power play came up empty on three opportunities.
Recap
It took the 12th ranked Huskies just one shot and one minute and eleven seconds to get a leg up on the Tommies. Adam Ingram scored the first goal of his season just over one minute in for an early one goal lead. The Tommies were 0-3-2 coming into the game when allowing the game's first goal.
Aaron Trotter was tripped up at 6:32 in what would have been an otherwise inconsequential sequence to lead to a goaltender interference penalty and a Tommie power play. The CCHA's best power play unit was denied a shot on goal despite putting four shots toward the net, three were blocked and one was off the mark. The Toms finished the period with a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal while also winning the possession battle.
The second period was one of tremendous offensive opportunity but even better goaltending. St. Cloud State, aided by their first power play of the game, tallied the periods first eight shots by 2:56. Later in the frame, Trotter was required to make a diving paddle save with the puck creeping toward the goal line to keep the game at 1-0.
St. Thomas' power play was awarded two more chances but was kept off the scoreboard. Their first power play at 10:56 included two strikes off the iron. One from Chase Cheslock and the other from Liam Malmquist. The second required a video review but, after a second look, was a confirmed no-goal. The Huskies outhsot the Tommies 11-9 in the frame and won 16 of the 25 faceoffs.
After a goal in the first two minutes, it took either team until the final five minutes of regulation to add another tally to the scoreboard. It was the Tommies' Cooper Gay at 15:17 who tipped in a point shot from Chase Cheslock for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The score remained tied for just 31 seconds as the Huskies delivered the dagger at 15:48 to retake the lead.
St. Thomas' extra attacker unit hit the ice at 18:17 and peppered the St. Cloud goal with six shots and a couple high quality scoring chances but no equalizer.
The Huskies outshot the Tommies 33-29 and won 43 of the 71 faceoffs. Aaron Trotter made 31 saves in the losing effort.
