Tommies take point in game one with Bemidji State

11/22/2024 10:25:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Liam Malmquist scored his fifth goal of the season for conference leading 14th point

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (3-5-4 overall, 2-2-3 CCHA) overcame two one-goal deficits but ultimately lost in a shootout against the Bemidji State Beavers (5-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 CCHA) on Friday night at Sanford Center.

Caiger Sterzer scored his second in as many games in the first period and Liam Malmquist extended his goal streak to three games with points in eight of his last nine games.

Recap
The Bemidji State Beavers scored on their very first shot on goal at 3:35 while being outshot 4-0 in the game's first three minutes. Shortly after, at 3:54, the Beavers had too many men on the ice and were issued a bench minor. The Tommies rifled off two shots on goal but could not score with the man advantage.

They did their damage while in 5-on-5 play at 8:11 when Caige Sterzer deflected a point shot from Ethan Gauer into the back of the net for his second in as many games. Jake Braccini set up Gauer's shooting lane with a blue line pass and was awarded the secondary assist. The assist was Gauer's sixth career point against his former team.

The Toms finished the first frame with a commanding 10-4 shots-on-goal advantage and won 11 of the 16 face-offs, thoroughly dominating the period with just one goal to show for their effort.

Second period play began much like the first, with a Bemidji State goal, this time at 7:42 on the power play, a Chase Foley interference penalty at 5:56 gave BSU the chance. Much like the first period, the Beavers were called for a penalty shortly after their goal, a boarding call at 9:09.

St. Thomas' red-hot power play unit would not be stopped this time, scoring a goal at 10:18. Liam Malmquist beat the goalie clean with a snipe from the high slot through traffic to tie the game back up. It was Malmquist's CCHA-leading 14th point of the season. Assisting on the play were Ryan O'Neill and Chase Foley

Bemidji State flipped the script in the period, outshooting the Tommies 10-9 and winning 14 of the second's 24 faceoffs.

The Tommies did not record a single shot on goal during the final 20 minutes. Aaron Trotter made all eight saves in the period to force the Toms into their fourth overtime period of the season.

Neither side scored a game-winning tally in the extra frame, but both put two shots on goal. Bemidji State scored one goal in the shootout, the Tommies did not. They are now 0-4 this season in shootouts.
