Casy Laylin scored but the Toms gave up two third period goals to fall 2-1
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The St. Thomas Tommies (3-6-4 overall, 2-3-3 CCHA) could not get over the hump against Bemidji State (6-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 CCHA) by conceding two third period goals to fall 2-1 at Sanford Center on Saturday night.
Casy Laylin scored his second of the season in the second period from Cooper Gay. Jake Sibell made saves on 25 of the 27 shots he faced, allowing a power play goal and a one-man rush goal in the losing effort.
Recap
The goalies came to play in the first period with nine shots on goal for Bemidji State and five for St. Thomas but no goals through 20 minutes. Mattias Sholl in net for Bemidji made a big stop on a two-on-one St. Thomas rush early in the period and Jake Sibell stoned a Beaver with an acrobatic save at 16:58 on a one-on-none rush.
The Tommies red-hot power play unit was held down without a shot during their one opportunity in the first period. St. Thomas was dominant in the face-off circle with 11 wins in 15 draws.
Casy Laylin's second goal of the season at 17:43 was the only goal of the second frame as both teams struggled to put pucks on net. Laylin was the beneficiary of a Beaver defenseman tripping on the blue line and relinquishing the puck. He started a three-on-none rush and passed it toward the middle to Cooper Gay. Gay could not get a clean shot off but picked up the loose puck behind the net. He sent a pass below the goal line to Laylin who sniped a sharp angle shot between the netminder's mask and the near post.
The Tommies were whistled for two penalties toward the end of the period, a Chase Foley holding minor at 18:236 and a Lucas Wahlin hook at 19:18. They kept the Beavers off the scoresheet for the first 42 seconds of their five-on-three power play to send the game into its second intermission.
Those penalties came back to bite the Purple as Bemidji scored with one second remaining on the first infraction at 0:36. They would later score at 11:41 and fended off the Tommies late charge to take game two, 2-1.
