Tommies suffer 21-7 setback at Morehead State
11/2/2024 4:43:00 PM | Football
MOREHEAD, KENT.– It was a rough Saturday for the University of St. Thomas football team. The Tommies four-game win streak came to a close on Saturday, as they were dealt a 21-7 loss by Morehead State University. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 5-4 overall and 4-1 in Pioneer Football League (PFL) play.
RECAP:
From the get-go, it looked like Saturday's game might be an offensive juggernaut, as both team's scored touchdowns on their first offensive possessions of the ball game. After the Eagles took an early 7-0 lead on a 22-yard pass from Carter Cravens to Ryan Upp, the Tommies answered with a touchdown of their own. After catching the ball around midfield, Colin Chase (Orange County, Calif. / St. John Bosco) turned on the jets, rushing into the end zone for a 68-yard touchdown reception. Ben Hoiland (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) connected on the point after attempt, evening the score at 7-7 with nine minutes remaining in the quarter.
After those initial plays, the defense settled in, as both St. Thomas and Morehead State were hard pressed to score another set of points. The Eagles did eventually break through the Tommies defense in the second quarter, taking a 14-7 lead with plenty of time remaining in regulation. St. Thomas, however, was unable to take advantage of its offensive chances. Despite a 100+ yard rushing performance from Hope Adebayo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley), his fourth consecutive such performance, and a 100+ passing performance from Tateoka, the Tommies were kept out of the end zone for the entirety of the second quarter, resulting in a 14-7 halftime lead for the Eagles.
St. Thomas looked to make a statement to open the third quarter. With the ball in Tateoka's hands, he lead the Tommies down to the Morehead 18-yard line. Still, St. Thomas had a chance to at least cut the lead to 14-10, and sent Hoiland out to attempt the field goal. Grif Wurtz (Chaska, Minn. / Chaska) pulled the ball out and rushed for the first down, only to come up one yard short, allowing the Eagles to take over on downs.
The St. Thomas defense held the Eagles at bay, keeping the game within striking distance for the red-hot Tommie offense. However, St. Thomas was forced to punt and turned the ball over on downs, allowing Morehead State to take a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter. In the end, the Tommies could not make up the 14-point deficit, suffering their first PFL loss by a final score of 21-7.
